Former India batsman Wasim Jaffer believes the pitch in Chennai for the third ODI between India and Australia is likely to favour the hosts. The three-match series is currently level at 1-1 and will be decided in the upcoming third and final game.
India won the first game by 5 wickets before suffering a humiliating 10-wicket defeat in the second ODI. In both the games, India’s top-order failed to deliver as Australia’s pacers led by Mitchell Starc proved too hot to handle. In the first ODI, India were reeling at 16 for 3 then 83 for 5 while chasing 189.

In the second ODI, Australia bowled out the hosts for a paltry 117 with Starc picking up 5 wickets. In reply, the visitors chased down the total in just 11 overs without losing a single wicket. Travis Head and Mitchell Marsh scored quickfire fifties to give their team a thumping win.

Wasim Jaffer on Chennai pitch:
As India look to bounce back after the heavy defeat in the second ODI, Wasim Jaffer has said that the hosts are likely to get good assistance from the Chennai pitch. Speaking to ESPNcricinfo, Jaffer also suggested that in-form Starc might struggle to do well in the game due to the lack of swing.
“I think Chennai’s pitch will favor Team India. Mitchell Starc might not be as effective due to lack of swing and sideways movement at the venue. Hence, India’s batters might be comfortable,” said Jaffer.
“The ball might also spin; hence, India have a better chance against Mitchell Marsh, although no boundary seems short when he plays that way. He has delivered the results, so Marsh’s wicket will be critical. If the ball spins, Marsh can somewhat struggle in Chennai,” Jaffer added.
Speaking further, Jaffer opined that the hosts are unlikely to make too many changes to their lineups for the series-decider after the heavy loss in the second game.
“I don’t think we will see changes for team India. However, they will have to improve their approach. From the batters’ perspective, it will be better as I don’t think there will be too much sideways movement,” said Jaffer.
