A lot will be at stake when Team India take on Australia in the third Test of the ongoing series. The penultimate match of the four-match series is scheduled to be played from March 1 at the Holkar Stadium in Indore.
Rohit Sharma & Co. have thoroughly dominated the series so far. India won both the Tests inside three days to take an unassailable lead in the series. The hosts have also retained the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. In the series-opener played in Nagpur, the home side thrashed Australia by an innings and 132 runs.
Australia’s fortunes did not change in the second Test either. The world number one Test side managed to do well in the first innings with the bat and also with the ball but a horror collapse in the second innings undid their effort. Team India went on to win the second Test in Delhi by 6 wickets.
Chance for Team India to qualify for WTC final:
When Team India will take the field for the third Test, they will not only have an opportunity to win the series but also seal their place in the final of the ongoing ICC World Test Championship. The home side can also displace Australia to become the new world number one Test side in the world.
A win will be enough for Team India to achieve all the three objectives. The hosts need at least one win in the remaining two Tests to qualify for the WTC final. One win will help them avert the threat of Sri Lanka who are still in race for the WTC final.
If India go on to win at least one of the remaining Test and even lose one, they will finish the series with a percentage 61.92 and qualify for the final alongside Australia. In case, India lose both the Tests, they will finish ahead of South Africa’s best possible finish at 56.94. However, they will need Sri Lanka to drop points against New Zealand to make it to the final.
If India wins the 3rd Test – India will officially qualify for the WTC Final and will officially become the No.1 Ranked Test team.
