Legendary Sachin Tendulkar has delivered his verdict on Suryakumar Yadav as a Test batsman. The right-handed batsman from Mumbai has taken international cricket by storm thanks to his stunning exploits in T20Is.
In 46 T20I innings so far, Suryakumar Yadav has smashed 1675 runs at an average of more than 46 and a strike-rate of over 175. He has also scored 3 centuries and 13 fifties already in the shortest format of the game.
Suryakumar Yadav is now also a regular member of India’s ODI squad. And he is now all set to begin his journey in Test cricket. He has been picked in the squad for the upcoming Test series between India and Australia. The series is scheduled to begin on Thursday (February 9) in Nagpur.
Sachin Tendulkar on Suryakumar Yadav:
While only time will tell how Suryakumar Yadav performs in the Test arena, former India batsman Sachin Tendulkar believes the batsman is well equipped to play in the oldest format of the game.
Tendulkar began by pointing out Suryakumar’s meteoric rise in international cricket before stating that the star batsman along with Shubman Gill and vice-captain KL Rahul have the potential to start in a playing XI.
“From entering into T20s and ODIs and now in the Test squad, he has made an incredible impression around the globe. Whoever follows Surya, they fall in love with his ability and the way he thinks,” Tendulkar was quoted as saying to PTI.
“But Test cricket is going to be different. Surya looks perfectly equipped to play Test cricket. Someone of his calibre should be considered along with KL Rahul and Shubman Gill. All three are capable players and I don’t want to pass any judgement here, but all three are capable enough to walk into the team,” he stated.
Suryakumar’s record in first-class cricket is a proof that he has the game to deliver in red-ball cricket. In 70 first-class matches so far, he has scored 5549 runs with the help of 14 centuries and 28 fifties.
