Riding on a brilliant century from Steve Smith and a half-century from Glenn Maxwell, Australia were 299 for 4 at stumps on Day 1 of the third Test at Ranchi.
After Australia skipper Steve Smith won an important toss, the Aussie openers Matt Renshaw and David Warner gave the visitors a flying start by adding 50 runs from only 57 balls before Warner was undone by a Ravindra Jadeja full toss.
Renshaw, who was looking good throughout his 44-run knock, was the next batsman to go after he edged an Umesh Yadav delivery straight to Virat Kohli at slip. 9 runs later, R Ashwin dismissed Shaun Marsh to put India on top at lunch. A 51-run partnership between Steve Smith and Peter Handscomb steadied the ship before the latter was beaten by a fine inswinging yorker from Umesh Yadav. But afterwards, it was just one-way traffic as Smith and Maxwell, who was making a comeback to the Test team, shared an unbeaten partnership of runs to put their team firmly in the driver’s seat. Smith was batting on 117 while Maxwell was unbeaten on 82 when the day ended.

I reckon @stevesmith49 is the best player ever to have looked so average at the start of his Test Career … #IndvAus #JustSaying

Ishant knew it was a no ball. He wanted to fix the umpire's error by taking that review. We are honest like that. #IndvAus

Ishant sharma didn't lose DRS on a No ball, EVM did.

Pretty disappointing the way that Kohli immediately looked to the dressing room for advice on how his shoulder should be treated. #INDvAUS

Smith is third fastest to 5000 runs in terms of matches & joins Bradman as the only player to have 5000 runs at average of 60 plus. #IndvAus

India's session. Australia will rue the three wickets they have lost after a very good toss to win

India has got DRS right this morning. Playing at Dhoni's home certainly has its advantages. #IndvAus

Condemning a pitch before a ball has been bowled is like sentencing a person before a hearing.
