Australia left India behind to become the new no.1 ranked ODI team in the world in the latest ICC rankings on March 22, 2023 thanks to their win in the third and final ODI in Chennai and as a result a 2-1 series win as well.
Australia had leveled the three-match ODI series in Vizag recently after they routed the Indian team for 117 with Mitchell Starc taking 5/53 and winning the match by 10 wickets. India had won the first ODI in Mumbai by 5 wickets in a closely fought low-scoring encounter thanks to KL Rahul’s 75*.
Meanwhile in the third ODI played at the M. Chidambaram stadium in Chennai, Australia had everything going for them as captain Steve Smith won the toss and chose to bat first. They made two changes, as David Warner came in for Cameron Green and Ashton Agar came in for Nathan Ellis keeping in mind that Chepauk’s pitch tended to aid spinners.
Australia posted 269 runs in 49 overs with Mitchell Marsh top-scoring with 47 runs. Alex Carey (38), Travis Head (33), Sean Abbott (26), and Marcus Stoinis (25) were the other run-getters. For India, Hardik Pandya with 3/44, and Kuldeep Yadav with 3/56 were the best bowlers.
In reply, Rohit Sharma (30) and Shubman Gill (37) added 65 runs for the first wicket. But then Australian bowlers tightened the noose on Indian batting as Adam Zampa with 4/45 and Ashton Agar with 2/41 bowled brilliantly in the middle overs.
Virat Kohli made 54 and Hardik Pandya made 40 to take India closer to the total, but Australian bowlers picked important wickets with help from stellar fielding and bowled India out for 248 and won the match by 21 runs and pocketed the series 2-1.
