Former Indian opener Gautam Gambhir said that Indian batters should have played Ranji Trophy before the start of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy–and feels that Australian batters lacked confidence in the first two matches as they didn’t play any tour games before the series.

Speaking to Sports Tak, Gautam Gambhir feels that the Indian batter should have played a few Ranji trophy matches before the series which would have helped them to adapt to the red-ball cricket easily and he also reckoned its more about getting match practice rather than playing in the nets or having a camp of around 20 days.

“Not 100 percent, make that 200 percent. The Indian batters should have played a few Ranji Trophy matches ahead of the Test series against Australia. However, they shouldn’t have played those matches just to prepare. It doesn’t matter if you conduct 20-day camps or bat in the nets.”

Gambhir also stressed that Australian batters struggled in the first two matches for not playing the practice match in India and added that lack of red-ball match practice might be an issue for both team batters.

The veteran stressed it is important for Indian fast bowlers to rest, but batters can play in Ranji Trophy which can boost their confidence going into the high-profile series.

“Australia struggled in the first two matches because of their mindset of not playing practice matches. This is a negative mindset. The same goes for the Indian batters. And I am talking about the batters, the fast bowlers need rest and they can take a break. But the batters should go play in Ranji Trophy, make centuries and double centuries. It is very important to play red-ball cricket before an important series,” Gambhir maintained.

Australia is well on the top in the fourth and final test of the Border Gavaskar Trophy. At the time writings Australia is 368-4, with Usman Khawaja and Cameron Green scoring a brilliant hundred in the 1st innings which look to score past 500 runs.
