Star Indian middle order batter Shreyas Iyer is likely to miss the entire IPL 2023 and WTC Final due to his back injury. According to reports, Shreyas Iyer is ruled out from cricket for at least 4-5 months. Shreyas’s absence will huge blow for the Indian team with the WTC final and ODI World Cup scheduled later this year.
Indian team dealt with a huge blow as India will be without the services of Jasprit Bumrah, Shreyas Iyer, and Rishabh Pant for India at the WTC Final India in June. Shreyas Iyer complained of back issues during the fourth and final Test between India and Australia, in Ahmedabad, and also Indian Skipper Rohit Sharma said that Shreyas Iyer’s scan reports were not “encouraging”.
“Iyer has been advised to go for surgery. He is keen to get operated on by a specialist in London, but if there is a decent option in India, then the surgery could take place here also,” TOI quoted according to a source.
The surgery is expected to be conducted either in India itself or in London with the BCCI monitoring the full process. Earlier in 2021, Iyer was out of action due to injury concerns in the run-up to the 2021 T20 World Cup and even though he was included as a reserve, he didn’t get a game.
It will interesting to see whether Shreyas Iyer play in ODI World Cup later this year as he was designated the No.4 batsman for India in the ODI cricket. Shreyas Iyer will also miss the Indian Premier League 2023, where he was appointed as the skipper of the franchise in IPL 2022. According to reports, Kolkata knight Riders are considering appointing Andre Russell as the skipper for their team.
Suryakumar Yadav Is Seen As Backup Option For Shreyas Iyer – Saba Karim
Former Indian Selector Saba Karim believes Surya Kumar Yadav is seen as a back option for the injured Shreyas Iyer, who is likely to play at NO.4 for India in ODI World Cup later this year. Saba Karim speaking to India News Sports feels the Indian team management is looking at Surya Kumar Yadav as a backup for injured Shreyas Iyer and also stressed the latter will first choice option to play the World Cup for India in 2023.
“The team management sees Suryakumar Yadav as an option for Shreyas Iyer. I am sure that Iyer will return and be India’s No. 4 at the World Cup because he has done well in that position. Suryakumar is a mystery at the moment. He is at the top in T20Is, how can he not score runs in ODIs? This is why I feel Rohit Sharma wants to give him a few more chances,” Saba Karim said.
The number one T20I batter in the world failed to capitalize on the limited opportunity provided to him in the ODI format. Suryakumar Yadav has scored only 2 half-centuries in the 21 matches he has played so far in ODIs.
