The fifth and final Test between India and England to be played in Chennai is all set to go ahead as planned despite the sensitive situation in the state after the death of Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa.
The speculation around the Test had risen following the politician’s demise with the state declaring a week of mourning which ends on December 12, four days before the fifth Test. Doubts over staging the match only increased after a Ranji Trophy match between Odisha and Jharkhand, which was supposed to take place in Dindigul from December 7, was rescheduled. A U-19 Cooch Behar Trophy match between Tamil Nadu and Chhattisgarh was also called off from the second day’s play.
However, the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association secretary Kasi Viswanathan on Thursday confirmed the cricket board is buckled up to host the match after getting the clearance from the Chennai Police.
Speaking to the Times of India, Kasi said:“There is no problem for us in conducting the match.Everything is in place. We had requested the TN police to provide the necessary security. I met the Commissioner of Police as well and they have given their nod to provide security for the contest.”
“There was not even a discussion from the government or police to stop the match. The TN police have confirmed that all security arrangements will be made accordingly . We have also informed the same to the BCCI,” he concluded.
