Australia Umpire Paul Reiffel, who was officiating the ongoing Test between India and England in Mumbai, will take no further part in the remainder of the match after suffering concussion following the blow to the back of his head on the first day of the match.
The freak incident happened in the 49th over of England’s innings when a lobbed throw from Bhuvneshwar Kumar hit the Aussie official on the back of the head and he collapsed. He was immediately helped off the pitch by England medical officials and was replaced by Television umpire Marais Erasmus.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), on Friday, confirmed the news that Marais Erasmus will officiate the remainder of the Test.
“Paul Reiffel underwent precautionary tests on Thursday, which came back all clear,” the BCCI said.
“Paul, however, has been advised to rest, which is the normal course prescribed following a concussion.
“As such, he will not take any further part in the Mumbai test and has been replaced by Marais Erasmus.”
Indian umpire Chettithody Shamshuddin, who was present in the ground as part of a programme to train local umpires on the DRS, replaced Erasmus as the television umpire.
