IND vs ENG, First Test: We Still Have A Chance, Says An Optimist Murali Vijay
Indian batsman Murali Vijay is hopeful that the Indian spinners can exploit the condition on the final day of the first Test against England to force a result. The draw is looking like the most likely result after the English openers finished the fourth day on 114 for 0, with their overall lead stretched to 163 runs.
Speaking to the media after the end of day’s play, the Indian opener said:“It’s a pretty good wicket, (though it has) gone slower. There’s a lot of assistance to the spinners now. Hopefully, we can put some pressure in the morning session get some wickets and you never know.”
Despite being on the backfoot after the end of the penultimate day of the Test, Vijay feels that the hosts still have the edge and some quick wickets on the final day can make the match interesting.
“Definitely, we have the edge. We have got closer to their target. We still have a chance, you never know. If in the morning session we get 3-4 quick wickets, in the last session we can score 200 runs and go for it. A very interesting game is there (on last day),” Vijay said.
When asked about what will be the visitors’ approach on the final day, the 32-year old said:“I am not thinking anything like that (about what England will do) as long as we take wickets. That’s our main aim rather than waiting for what England will do. We could have gone ahead of them; ifs and buts are there, but it’s been very good (batting performance).”
He also heaped praise on R Ashwin and Wriddhiman Saha for their partnership of 64 runs that helped the hosts to get close to England’s first innings total of 537.
“It (partnership for the 7th wicket) was definitely crucial. They have been doing this job for a while now. Good to see Saha and Ashwin putting up a vital partnership. Every time we have been in a tricky situation they have got us out,” said Vijay.
He also heaped praise on English youngster Haseeb Hameed who remained unbeaten on 62 after the fourth day’s play.
“Pretty good talent saw a calm head. These are good signs for a cricketer. He (Hameed) has a bright future,” he said.
