After toiling more than 90 minutes in the first session on the third day’s play, Indian team finally got their first and the only wicket in the session of in-form batsman Jonny Bairstow, whose stumps were castled by perfect reverse-swinging delivery from Umesh Yadav. This was the only moment of joy for the hosts, who had a tough time early on in the day. They failed to make the most out of the conditions thanks to a vigilant and wise batting from both Bairstow and Ben Stokes.
Earlier, Stokes was deceived in the air by Ravichandran Ashwin but Wriddhiman Saha, who has been rated best wicket-keeper by Indian off-spinner Harbhajan Singh, failed to gather the ball, giving ample of time to the batsman to return to the crease. This chance was enough for Stokes to learn the lesson that he can’t afford to make these type of small mistakes. Both batsmen then dealt with Indian bowlers with the full force, especially Stokes, who played quite well since that stumping chance.
On the other hand, Jonny Bairstow, the highest run-scorer of this year so far, dominated Indian bowling, adding 53 runs before being dismissed. Both of them shared 110 runs for the sixth wicket.
Talking of ineffective Indian bowling line-up, it has been as disappointing as the form of Ben Duckett in this series.
The new ball is available now and it will be interesting to see whether captain decides to show faith in Umesh Yadav, giving him chance to reverse the ball or will he give the new ball to Mohammed Shami in hope of expecting the same thing which he did at the start of England’s innings on Friday.
England were six down with a score of 191 with 264 runs away from India’s total. They are still 64 runs away from saving the follow-on.
