IND vs NZ 2017: Backing Myself to Play At least One Game in the Series – Shreyas Iyer
A prolific run-scorer in the domestic circuit for Mumbai, Shreyas Iyer has been included in the Indian squad for the T20I series against the Kiwis.
The stylish right-hander addressed the press conference ahead of the opening T20I at the Feroz Shah Kotla Ground in Delhi and spoke about his chances of being part of the playing XI, India’s chances in the series and much more.
When asked whether he was backing himself to be part of the playing XI Iyer said,
“Yeah after getting included in the squad I will definitely back myself to be part of the playing XI. Even if I get one chance out of the three matches it will be very satisfying for me,” Iyer said.
But he conceded the fact that whether he is in the team or not doesn’t matter but what matters is India’s victory.
When asked what sort of tactics has been discussed on New Zealand during the team meeting, Iyer smiled and said,
“I haven’t been part of any team meeting yet, to be honest, but yes New Zealand is a very challenging team compared to other teams, and they have come up with some really impressive performance in the recent past. I can’t disclose what strategies are discussed so can’t say anything now.” Said Iyer.
Iyer has been an impressive performer opening the batting in IPL. When asked how he would approach as the Indian team is experimenting a lot with their middle order Iyer said,
“I think I am very flexible. I don’t mind batting at any number. Even in the IPL this year I was shuffled from No 4 to No 3 but it still didn’t really matter to me because I know I am really comfortable playing in any position and even whatever number I bat if I play the game I would be very comfortable and would see to it that I can give my best.
Iyer scored a brilliant match-winning century during the final of the Tri-Series against South Africa A while turning out for India A. It was scored against a quality bowling attack, as the right-hander looked in ominous touch. When asked if that innings will give him confidence ahead of the T20I series against the Kiwis he said it did help him and gave him confidence.
“It was really helpful for me since it was the final game and you know the South Africans were a really challenging team, and we had lost the first game against them, and the 2nd game also went to the last over. It was the decider in the final. Obviously, I was going through a good patch at that time, I was getting runs, getting starts but wasn’t able to convert those starts into big ones. In the final, it came out really well.
It was really a satisfying knock to get the team through and obviously when you help the team win you get the attention of the teammates as well so that is a really good feeling and you know contributing in bits and parts is really amazing,” Iyer signed off.
