IND vs NZ 2017: Pune Curator Promises Sporting Pitch in the 2nd ODI

When India last played an international match at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Ground in Pune, the pitch was touted as poor as the first of the three-match Test series between India and Australia finished within two and a half days.

The left-arm spinner Steve O’Keefe bagged sensational match figures of 12/70 to give Australia their first win on Indian soil after almost a decade.

Shane Warne had called the track “as an eighth-day wicket’ on the first day of the match itself, but pitch curator Panduarang Salgoancar is confident of the fact that the turf won’t face the similar fate in the 2nd ODI between India and New Zealand on Wednesday.

“It will be a good cricket pitch, and we will have a good match. I am not allowed to speak to the media, and this is all I can say at this point in time,” he said.

Steve O’Keefe was the star for Australia in Pune Test match for picking up his career-best figures of 12/70.

When asked if he is confident of the fact that a similar fate won’t be repeated, Salgoancar said,

“I am telling you this wicket will play well, and we will see quality action.” ICC Match referee had given a “poor” rating to the pitch, and the news was forwarded to the Board of Control for Cricket in India.

“Broad, in accordance with Clause 3 of the ICC Pitch and Outfield Monitoring Process, submitted his report to the ICC in which he expressed concern over the quality of the pitch,” the statement of ICC read.

Virat Kohli scored a hundred against New Zealand in the first ODI in Mumbai.

As per the ICC’s pitch regulations, a pitch is deemed to be poor if any of the following conditions apply,

“The pitch offers excessive seam movement at any stage of the match;  The pitch displays excessive unevenness of bounce for any bowler at any stage of the match; The pitch offers excessive assistance to spin bowlers, especially early in the match; The pitch displays little or no seam movement or turn at any stage in the match together with no significant bounce or carry, thereby depriving the bowlers of a fair contest between bat and ball.

Salgoancar had asked the BCCI Pitch Committee Daljit Singh and West Zone head Dhiraj Prasanna to inspect the pitch tie and again.

“I had clearly warned the BCCI against preparing a bald and dry pitch. I don’t want to take names, but I had told them that not watering the pitch and removing the grass cover could have a detrimental effect. I know deep within that I had tried my best to make them understand,” he had said.
