Vijay Shankar might have made it to the Indian team quite earlier had injuries not marred his career. He was a part of the India A side that went to Australia last year, but an injury ahead of the tour ruled him out.

Incidentally, Hardik Pandya was also part of the team, and he made it to the Test side in November when he got selected for the home series against England. On the other hand, injury put Shankar behind Pandya for the all-rounder spot.

A good came news came for Shankar when Pandya got rested for the Test series against Sri Lanka, and there were chances that he might be called in at some point of time for Pandya,

“It feels great. I didn’t expect it. I always wanted to give my best in whatever cricket I play and never have I thought that if I do well in this tournament or competition I will get picked at the next level. It’s a dream come true moment and I’m looking forward to my maiden stint in the Indian dressing-room,” Vijay told TOI.

Shankar though has been part of IPL franchises likes Sunrisers Hyderabad and Chennai Super Kings, but he has come in the India side through a proper channel, i.e. coming from domestic cricket to India A and then coming to the Indian team. However, he hit full form in the series against New Zealand A and his domestic form meant he was an automatic choice in the team in place of Bhuvneshwar Kumar.

Vijay, who is a batting all-rounder, does not have the speed that of Pandya but the all-rounder has revealed he has worked on his speed with LP Balaji (Tamil Nadu bowling coach).

“I have improved on my bowling speed. Balaji helped me understand how to make them, ost of my non-bowling arm and helped me in my run-up. It has helped me immensely,” he added.

Though Vijay Shankar might have to wait for his dream of donning the blue cap, as Ishant Sharma is expected to replace Bhuvneshwar Kumar in the side. While Murali Vijay – statemate of Shankar in Tamil Nadu – will get his opening place back in place of Shikhar Dhawan.

The second Test of the series will start on November 24 in Nagpur.
