IND vs SL 2017: Virat Kohli to Take a Call on his Return for T20I Series

India skipper Virat Kohli was expected to get rested for the complete limited-overs series against Sri Lanka, but when the selectors only announced the squad for ODI series and not for the T20Is, it raised few questions whether Kohli would be back for the T20I’s or not.

With Indian team all set to travel to South Africa for a two-month long tour, Kohli was expected to get rest, but now it has come to notice that Kohli had himself asked selectors to wait and he will be taking a call  – whether to play the T20I series or not – in days to come.

“Virat has told the selectors that he needs some time to take a call on whether he will be playing the T20s or not. That’s the reason why they have not announced the T20 squad. Virat has some personal commitments until December 12. Post that, whether he would like to take rest or just play T20s will be his call completely,” a BCI official told PTI.

Virat though will be playing the third and final Test of the series against Sri Lanka which will be played at his home ground at Feroz Shah Kotla stadium in New Delhi.

Post that, he will take rest for the ODI series and is expected to make a comeback for the T20I series that will follow.

In Virat’s absence, Rohit Sharma – limited overs’ vice-captain – will be taking charge of the team for the three one-dayers. It will be the first time when Rohit will lead the Indian team at international level.

He had led IPL franchise Mumbai Indians to title victory three times in five seasons, and Rohit would hope to emulate his IPL success at international level. The first ODI of the series will be played in Dharamsala on December 10. Mohali will host the second ODI on December 13 while the third and the final ODI of the series will be played on December 17 in Visakhapatnam.

The last time India and Sri Lanka faced off each other in the ODI series in India, Virat Kohli – then the stand-in captain – led the team to a 5-0 victory over the visitors.
