IND vs SL, 2nd Test: Virat Kohli Breaks Ricky Ponting & Graeme Smith’s Record With 10th Century Of 2017

Team India skipper added yet another to his already illustrious cap after being slammed his 19th Test century in the ongoing second Test against Sri Lanka in Nagpur. The right-handed batsman, who is yet to lose a series as a skipper in Tests and ODIs, has now gone past the legendary Ricky Ponting and Graeme Smith to become the skipper with most international centuries in a calendar year and also the first to score ten centuries in a calendar year.

Starting the day on 54, Kohli looked in ominous form right from the word go and reached his century off just 130 balls. It was Kohli’s tenth century this year, and it helped him to surpass Ricky Ponting and Graeme Smith both of whom had scored nine centuries in a calendar year. Ponting had achieved the feat twice in 2005 and 2006 while Smith had done the same in 2005.

The century, which is Kohli’s 51st international ton, also helped him to become the India skipper with most Test centuries, going past the legendary Sunil Gavaskar who had scored 11 Test centuries as captain.

India skipper with most Test centuries:

Captain Centuries in Test
Virat Kohli 12
Sunil Gavaskar 11
Mohammad Azharuddin 9
Sachin Tendulkar 7
MAK Pataudi 5

Even in the last game at the Eden Gardens, Kohli had achieved two major milestones after scoring 104. The century, which was his first at the iconic Gardens, made him only the second Indian batsman after the legendary Sachin Tendulkar to score 50 international tons. Kohli is now eighth in the list of most number of international centuries.

He had also equalled Hashim Amla’s record of hitting the fastest 50 international centuries, reaching the landmark in his 348th innings.

The latest knock, nonetheless, extended Kohli’s unprecedented record as skipper. He had scored four consecutive double centuries in four successive Test series during the last season.
