Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma are two of the biggest stalwarts in Indian cricket over the last decade or so and they have been servicing the game for the past decade and continuing to dominate the game in this era, inspiring millions of youngsters to take up the game. However, there have been reports of a rift between the two greats of the game in recent years.

There was a talk that things were not good between high-profile Indian players like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. According to various reports, they were some misunderstanding between two Indian stalwarts and it came to light after the 2019 World Cup, which head coach Ravi Shastri later resolved for the betterment of the team.

1. Rohit Camp And Virat Camp After India’s Loss To New Zealand In The Semifinal

There were strong rumours of a rift between then-India captain Kohli and vice-captain Rohit after the heartbreaking loss against the Kiwis, They were reports suggesting then-Indian vice-captain Rohit Sharma was unhappy with Virat Kohli over the team selection–and a few decisions in the semifinal as he unfollowed Virat Kohli and his wife Anushka Sharma in Instagram. Shedding light on the incident former Indian fielding coach R.Sridhar in his book, wrote

“After the 2019 World Cup, there was a lot of bad press about what allegedly happened in the dressing room during our campaign and following our loss to New Zealand in the semifinal. We were informed that there was a Rohit camp and a Virat camp, that someone had unfollowed another on social media – stuff that could be unsettling if you allowed it to fester.”

As he confirmed, that then-Indian head coach Ravi Shastri interfered in the matter to solve the issue between the Indian players for the good of Indian Cricket.

2. There Could Be Some Clashes And Times When You Are Not Happy With Someone – Shikhar Dhawan Indirect Say on The Clash

Shikhar Dhawan, who was regularly part of the Indian team since 2013, spoke about the incident he stated that India has a large group of players–and there is the possibility to have some clashes in the team.

Speaking about the divided groups in the Indian team, which emerged post-India’s loss against New Zealand in the semifinal of the 2019 World Cup, Dhawan reiterated that it is normal to have such issues.

“It’s a very human and normal thing to have egos. We are together for (almost) 220 days. Sometimes there are misunderstandings between people. It’s the same with us as well. I am not speaking about Rohit (Sharma) or Virat (Kohli), but a general thing,” he added.

“We have a 40-member team, which includes support staff and managers. There could be some clashes and times when you are not happy with someone. It happens. And why not? When things improve, the love also increases,” Dhawan on the incident between two superstars in Cricket.

Shikhar Dhawan’s statement once again proved that they were some sort of rift between Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli in the team, post the 2019 World Cup.

3. There Is No Battle Between Virat Kohli And Rohit Sharma But There Is Ego

Former Indian selector Chetan Sharma made a shocking revelation about many Indian players during the sting operation conducted by the Zee News, where he confirmed the rift between Virat Kohli and former Indian skipper Sourav Ganguly during his stint as BCCI president and also opened up about the incident between Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli.

“There is no battle between Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma but there is ego”. Both are like big film stars you can say, Amitabh Bachan and Dharmendra,” Chetan Sharma said.

The Indian chief selectors, who have seen the Indian stars from close quarters had confirmed that the star batters had ego clashes among themselves in the team, as they do not get along very well in off the field.

4. Virat Kohli Skipped The ODI Series In South Africa Due To Personal Commitments

After quitting the T20 Captaincy in 2021, Virat Kohli showed the aspiration to lead the team in ODIs and Tests especially with the ODI World Cup 2023 being scheduled to play in India. But the BCCI and the Indian selectors wanted the same captain in the white ball format, which was not well received by Virat Kohli.

Virat Kohli skipped the three One-day Internationals due to personal reasons, it had given rise to speculation that all is not well in the team as he does not want to be part of the Rohit Sharma-led side in one-day Internationals, but soon the Indian batting maestro has played under the present Indian skipper in all three formats of the game.

It seems like two Indian teammates do not get along with each other off-field, as their posts insist that they have separate favourites list of players in the Indian dressing room. Meanwhile, present Indian skipper Rohit Sharma gets along with Shardul Thakur, Dinesh Karthik, Rishabh Pant, Shreyas Iyer, Yuzvendra Chahal, and Kuldeep Yadav as he was seen with these players during off-time in cricket, as they would hang out during their break times. According to a report, Apart from team meetings, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma would have their time with a different set of players, which says that the two cricketers do not enjoy each other company off the field.
