Former Indian cricketer Ajit Agarkar has applied for the position of chief selector of the national selection committee. A source close to the Mumbai Cricket Association has confirmed the development of Agarkar’s application for the post of chairman of selectors in the Indian team.

Earlier, it was reported that Ajit Agarkar is the front-runner for the next chief selector of the selection committee,  He has represented India in more than 200 international matches in all three formats of the game. The 45-year-old was part of the Indian squad for three ODI World Cups and the pacer is part of India’s 2007 World Cup-winning squad under the leadership of the legendary MS Dhoni.

The Mumbai cricketer is the potential candidate to replace the former Chief selector Chetan Sharma after his resignation on the back of a sting operation in February 2023. The Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) is set to interview the shortlisted candidates on July 1, the appointment will be crucial for India’s chance in the Asia Cup 2023 and ODI World Cup 2023.

The selection committee is currently led by former batter Shiv Sunder Das on an interim basis, as they selected the Test and ODI squads for the upcoming Caribbean series with few domestic performers being ignored from the squad for the West Indies tour.

After the emergence of the news regarding Agarkar being the front-runner for the Chief Selector job,  Delhi Capitals announced the departure of their assistant coaches Ajit Agarkar and Shane Watson from the team as they announced the news on social media on June 29. The duo joined the management of Delhi Capitals after IPL 2022 mega auction.
