Kolkata Knight Riders assistant coach Abhishek Nayar backs out of favour Indian all-rounder Venkatesh Iyer to make it into the Indian team to play a supportive role for the star all-rounder Hardik Pandya in the white-ball cricket. The 28-year-old is one of the standby players in the Indian team for the 2023 Asian Games.
Hardik Pandya has been the best all-rounder for India in the white-ball format of the game. The 29-year-old balances this Indian team perfectly and his form with both bat and ball and his role will be crucial for the Indian team going into the important World Cup year whereas Venkatesh Iyer played his last game for India in 2022 and was dropped for the team due to the poor form.
Speaking to the PTI, Abhishek Nayar said that Venkatesh Iyer was unfortunate to get injured last year and believes that he is a player, who can bat at any position in the batting order alongside bowling some overs in the middle.

“Unfortunately, he suffered an injury last year. In terms of the future, he is a very versatile player. You’ve seen him bat up the order, down the order and he can give you some overs as well. He’s someone who can adapt very quickly because of the amount of intelligence and smartness he possesses,” Abhishek Nayar said.
Venkatesh Iyer had excellent IPL with Kolkata Knight Riders as he seemed equally comfortable against pace and spin. The all-rounder has been in fine form and could be a handy addition to the Indian team in the future, as he can also bowl some overs in the middle for the Indian team.
I Feel Venkatesh Iyer Is On Upward Curve As A Cricketer – Abhishek Nayar
Abhishek Nayar feels that being a standby player for the Asian Games would be good for Venkatesh Iyer as he would feel good to be part of the Indian setup and said that he would look to use every opportunity coming his way to play for the country at the highest level.

“It’s all about feeling part of that team environment. I feel he is on an upward curve as a cricketer. He’s at that phase where, you know, needs to just keep going and just keep believing in his art all over again,” Abhishek Nayar added.
Venkatesh has put in the grind on the domestic circuit and made a comeback in the IPL 2023, where he played a few match-winning knocks for the Kolkata Knight Riders being one of the bright spots for the team alongside young Rinku Singh in the 2023 season.
