Former Indian wicketkeeper-batter Deep Dasgupta lambasted West Indies batters for failing to apply themselves to their home conditions on the 1st test of their new World Test Championship cycle. Having opted to bat first, the West Indies team was bowled out cheaply for 150 runs under 65 overs on Day 1.

Except for the debutant Alick Athanaze, none of the West Indies batters tried to play a long innings, as they fell in packs in the middle overs to the likes of the experienced Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja and the shot selection of the Caribbean batters came under the scanner as they could not get going on the Day 1 of the game.

Reviewing the Day 1 play on Espncricinfo, Deep Dasgupta slammed the home team for their poor batting on the Day 1, as expressed his disappointment on the approach of the West Indies team and questioned the consistency and shot selection of their players against the high-quality opponents.

“Some of the other batting was ordinary. And I will be forgiving if I say ordinary because there wasn’t quite much there. It was quite disheartening to see the approach.

“They’re all good players because they have scored runs in the past. But consistency is something that’s lacking and bothering them. Some of the shots that were played were average, or even below average to be honest,” Deep Dasgupta said.

West Indies are going through some tough times in International Cricket, as the two-time champions West Indies will not feature in the ODI World Cup for the first time in 48 years, since the launch of the marquee event back in 1975 with their players failing to step up to perform for the team in the highest level.

Alick Athanaze Looked Composed And Solid – Deep Dasgupta

Deep Dasgupta lauded the debutant Alick Athanaze for his calm and composed batting in the 1st innings, as his partnership alongside former skipper Jason Holder was the only thing that looked promising on the Day 1 play and feels that the youngster has good defensive technique and temperament in his batting for red-ball cricket.

“He (Athanaze) looked composed and solid. His partnership with Holder seemed to be the only time when the West Indies seemed to pose any kind of threat to the Indian bowlers.

“It is so vital to have a good defensive technique in this format and he seems to have that. The temperament in shot selection was also there. It is something that should excite West Indies cricket fans,” Deep Dasgupta added.

West Indies had a poor day 1 on the 1st test, having bowled for 150 runs in the 1st innings. The West Indies bowlers could not pick up a single wicket in the third session and the team will look to make a comeback on Day 2 to pick up some early wickets to put pressure on the Indian team.
