Indian veteran off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin became the second-highest wicket-taker for India in International Cricket following his terrific 10-wicket haul against West Indies in the 1st test of the two-match series. The 36-year-old took his wicket tally to 709 in international cricket surpassing Harbhajan Singh’s record of 707 International wickets.

Ravichandran Ashwin was the standout performer for India with the ball against West Indies in the 1st test as he recorded one of his best away performances, taking 5/60 in the first innings and 7/71 in the second innings to finish with figure 12/131  to seal the game for the Indian team on Day 3.

Anil Kumble is the leading wicket-taker for India in International Cricket as he picked up 953 wickets in 401 matches for India and Ashwin has equalled the record of  Anil Kumble’s most number of 10-wicket hauls for the India team in test cricket and the Tamil Nadu all-rounder picked up 5-wicket haul in both innings of the match to help India secure a dominating win on the away conditions.

Earlier in the 1st innings, Ashwin completed 700 wickets in international cricket on Wednesday during day one of the first Test match against West Indies and recorded his 33rd five-wicket haul in Test matches. He also became the first Indian bowler to dismiss the father-son duo in test cricket after dismissing Tagenarine Chanderpaul and Shivnarine Chanderpaul.

The Tamil Nadu all-rounder made a stunning comeback into the playing 11 picking up 12 wickets in the game, Ashwin was dropped from the playing 11 against Australia as the team went in with four seamers for the one-off test against Australia as they failed to assess the conditions in Kennington, Oval which eventually led to the team loss in the one-off test in England.

Ashwin has been the standout performer at home over the years and he has improved his record in foreign conditions over the last few years to provide some crucial breakthroughs for his team.

The veteran was brought back into the team in place of the extra seamer in the team, which eventually helped the Indian team in the game in West Indies and the veteran spinner will look to continue his fine form going into the 2nd test match.
