Former Indian selector Dilip Vengsarkar heaped praise on young Indian opener Yashasvi Jaiswal for his match-winning performance against West Indies in the 1st test of the two-match test series. The Left-handed opener displayed excellent composure, as the youngster showed a lot of grit and determination to score his maiden century in International Cricket.
The 21-year-old became the 17th Indian player to score a century in his debut innings for the country and also has the unique record of playing the maximum number of balls by an Indian debutant in the longer format of the game having played 387 balls in his knock of 171 runs in the 1st innings.
Speaking to Telegraph, Dilip Vengsarkar revealed the conversation he had with the youngster before the start of the series, as he wanted the youngster to make full use of the opportunity to represent the country at the highest level and said that he advised him to be consistent for India playing across the formats and hailed for his brilliant century on his debut innings as he was determined to play a big knock for the team against the Men in Maroon.
“I reminded him about the significance of the opportunity and told him that he shouldn’t let it go but grab it with both hands. I also told him to be consistent since at this level consistency matters. Single-minded devotion has to be there. Work hard and be focused, and then things will fall into place,” Dilip Vengsarkar said.
“I’m happy that he has managed to establish himself at the first given opportunity. His application was exemplary, and the discipline and determination Jaiswal showed to perform will help him a long way in his career,” Dilip Vengsarkar added.
Yashasvi Jaiswal made it into the Indian team following a terrific IPL season with the Rajasthan Royals and a domestic season with Mumbai. The opener was the standout performer for Rajasthan Royals in the recently concluded Indian Premier League and impressed everyone with his fearless approach to batting at the top of the order.
His Focus On Debut That You Have Got To Applaud – Dilip Vengsarkar
Dilip Vengsarkar lauded Yashasvi Jaiswal for taking up the opportunity to score runs, whenever they are a loose ball against West Indies and hailed him for his excellent composure against the pacers and spinner in his debut game and added that he was focused to score big runs for the team in his debut innings in International Cricket.
“The most important thing during his innings was that he never let go of an opportunity to score, and there weren’t any loose shots. Such has been his focus on debut that you have got to applaud,” Dilip Vengsarkar added.
Given his form and confidence, he would be a vital cog for the Indian team going forward in all three formats of the game. The Left-handed opener will look to continue his fine form into the 2nd test followed by the five-match T20 series against West Indies.
