Former Sunrisers Hyderabad head coach Brian Lara feels that young Indian fast bowling sensation Umran Malik needs to develop more skills to his arsenal alongside being quicker with the ball. The 23-year-old had a poor IPL season with Sunrisers Hyderabad in IPL 2023.
Umran Malik has been a sensational performer in the last couple of years in domestic and International cricket, as he made the headlines with his ability to bowl at a high pace in any format of the game but has found himself wanting in recent times, as he has unable to produce any match-winning performance for his side.
Speaking on the YouTube channel ‘Wake Up With Sorabh’, Brian Lara believes Umran Malik will be a sensation for India in the future if he manages to develop a few skills and wants him to be sensible in his approach and asserted that he has got a lot of years in International Cricket.
“He will be a sensation, but very quickly he will have to learn that fast bowling really does not trouble the best players in the world.
“You have to have the ability to do something with the ball, be sensible, and maybe understand times when you have to trickle back or understand the times when you have to up the tempo. He is very young and has got a lot of years ahead of him,” Brian Lara said.
Many cricket experts believe that Umran Malik has a bright future ahead and already has impressed some legends of the game with his performances in the limited opportunity for the Indian team in international cricket and will look to improve his skills going forward in the game.
Umran Malik Seems To Be In The Loop For The World Cup – RP Singh
Earlier, RP Singh said that Umran Malik has got a good number of matches before the World Cup to showcase his skill set for the Indian team and become an integral part.
Singh reckons that pace can work in his favour but he does not move the ball much and added that pace cannot be the only weapon in the International as he needs to make a game plan to play the highly quality opponents.
“You have a good number of matches before the World Cup. He can get 5-6 games in the Asia Cup, and three more matches (against Australia). Umran has the advantage of pace. But the issue with him is the skill — his deliveries do not move much.
“In international cricket, speed alone cannot be the only weapon. You have to make a game plan as well, and that is something he is not learning as quickly as he should. He also concedes a lot of runs. But he seems to be in the loop for the World Cup because he has the pace,” RP Singh said.
Umran Malik had a poor IPL season with Sunrisers Hyderabad in IPL 2023. He was benched following his poor performance with the ball for the major part of the season. In the eight matches of IPL 2023, he has claimed only five wickets at an average of 43.40 and a higher economy rate of 10.85.
