Team India skipper Rohit Sharma said that he could emphasize what star Indian duo Shreyas Iyer and KL Rahul going through to return to International Cricket after recovering from major injuries. The duo is currently undergoing rehabilitation at the National Cricket Academy and their participation in the marquee event is still uncertain as the team is hopeful of getting them fit for the ODI World Cup.
The pair have been preparing for an India comeback in NCA ahead of the mega events this year. Iyer and Rahul shared batting videos on social media. KL Rahul was also observed practising his wicket-keeping skills as he is likely to keep wickets for India in the ODI World Cup and it is reported that the Karnataka batter is likely to play a practice match to prove his fitness for the Asia Cup 2023.
Speaking to the media at an event, Rohit Sharma admitted that it is not easy to make a comeback to the team after a big injury as both players underwent a major injury and said that the selection on the team will be based on their recovery from the injury and revealed that no players, who are automatic choice to the team as everyone will have to fight for their spot in the team.
“Shreyas and KL are coming off not playing anything for four months, big injuries, surgeries rather. Both had surgeries. I know, I had to undergo surgery once and how it feels afterward, it is quite tough. We have to see, how they respond, what they do,”
“The selection (meeting) will be there in a few days, we will have a good debate about what we can do. But honestly, nobody is an automatic choice – they all have to fight for the spot – everyone has to, whether it is a top spot or a bottom spot,” Rohit Sharma said.
The absence of Iyer and Rahul from the team would give a chance to Suryakumar Yadav and Sanju Samson to be part of the Asia Cup 2023 as they will look to prove their case strong for the ODI World Cup later this year.

Rohit Sharma said that they have got a lot of options for their spot in the team, as the team management will try to find the right combination going into the ODI World Cup and reckons that Asia Cup 2023 will give them a chance to test some new players.
“We have got a lot of names there. We will see what is the right combination for us to go in the World Cup but before we have the Asia Cup,” Rohit Sharma added.
Asia Cup 2023 will be held in Pakistan and Sri Lanka is based on the hybrid concept, where both countries will co-host the event as four matches will be played in Pakistan, and the remaining nine matches will be played in Sri Lanka.
