Former Indian head coach Ravi Shastri dismissed the chocking tag of the Indian team following their poor performance in recent ICC events, as they failed to get past the knockout stages of the marquee events. India has not won an ICC trophy since winning the 2013 Champions Trophy under MS Dhoni’s captaincy.
Since India’s victory in the 2013 Champions Trophy, India has advanced to the ODI World Cup semifinals in 2015, the T20 World Cup final in 2016, the ODI World Cup final in 2019, and the 2021 and 2023 WTC Final but could not go one step further in the big tournaments.
Speaking on The Week, Ravi Shastri believes that the Indian team had the opportunity to win all three World Cups across the formats and added that the Indian team was unfortunate to miss out on the trophy after doing well in the league stages and reckons that any individual cannot be blamed for the failure of the team in ICC events, as it requires combined effort to win the championship.
“We have not got it because when you want to win the big one, you need a combined effort. You cannot blame one individual, one captain,” Ravi Shastri added.
Many cricket experts and fans expect India to end their ICC title dry spell in the ODI World Cup later this year in India as the Men in Blue have crumbled under pressure in the crunch moments of the game, losing in the Champions Trophy final in 2017, Semifinals in 2019, and WTC finals in 2021 and 2023.
