Former Indian head coach Ravi Shastri dismissed the chocking tag of the Indian team following their poor performance in recent ICC events, as they failed to get past the knockout stages of the marquee events. India has not won an ICC trophy since winning the 2013 Champions Trophy under MS Dhoni’s captaincy.

Since India’s victory in the 2013 Champions Trophy, India has advanced to the ODI World Cup semifinals in 2015, the T20 World Cup final in 2016, the ODI World Cup final in 2019, and the 2021 and 2023 WTC Final but could not go one step further in the big tournaments.

Speaking on The Week, Ravi Shastri believes that the Indian team had the opportunity to win all three World Cups across the formats and added that the Indian team was unfortunate to miss out on the trophy after doing well in the league stages and reckons that any individual cannot be blamed for the failure of the team in ICC events, as it requires combined effort to win the championship.

“I would not say that. I mean, these two teams that were playing [India and Australia] were the only two teams that had a chance to win all three World Cups. And it is not that we have been rolled over [at World Cups]. We have been in semi-finals, we have been in finals,” Shastri stated.

“We have not got it because when you want to win the big one, you need a combined effort. You cannot blame one individual, one captain,” Ravi Shastri added.

Many cricket experts and fans expect India to end their ICC title dry spell in the ODI World Cup later this year in India as the Men in Blue have crumbled under pressure in the crunch moments of the game, losing in the Champions Trophy final in 2017, Semifinals in 2019, and WTC finals in 2021 and 2023.

If You Have Not Done That, You Do Not Deserve To Win – Ravi Shastri

Ravi Shastri believes that only big hundreds in the World Cup and World Test Championship final can help the team’s success in the marquee event and reckons that the batters need to set up a platform for the bowlers to do their job for the country in the big events.

“You need 100s in a World Cup, World Test Championship final. Then you have a good chance of setting it up for the bowlers and winning the trophy. If you do not get a 100, you need at least three 50s, whether it is Test, T20, or one-day cricket. If you have not done that, you do not deserve to win,” Ravi Shastri added

The much-anticipated ICC World Cup 2023 is reportedly set to be held on October 5 to 19 November 2023. The format of the tournament, there will be 45 league games, 2 semifinals, and a final. A total of 10 teams will take part in the tournament in which two teams will select through the World Cup Qualifiers in Zimbabwe.
