While the yo-yo test remains a non-negotiable parameter for selection in the national team, India A team management is probably done with the fitness test. A report in IANS suggests that the test is not compulsory to be selected in India A squad. The update comes as a big surprise as many players from India A have graduated to the national level.

In fact, Sanju Samson was also dropped from India A for failing the yo-yo test in 2018 but now it isn’t compulsory to be part of the squad. The team management headed by Ravi Shastri might ask India A’s management to make the yo-yo test mandatory as in no case the senior management would want a player to fail the test after getting selected.

The yo-yo test was made mandatory by Shastri and Virat Kohli in 2017. Suresh Raina was the first player to be dropped after he failed to clear the test. Later, Yuvraj Singh also failed to make his comeback as he could not touch the desired mark.

Washington Sundar was to get a maiden call-up for Australia T20Is in 2017 but he failed the test too. In 2018, Ambati Rayudu made his ODI return following glorious returns in IPL 2018 but got dropped as he failed the test. Mohammed Shami was also sidelined from the Test squad due to the same reason.
Since then, every player has cleared the test and those failing it have been dropped. As per reports, Manish Pandey was the fittest player in 2017 as he also leapfrogged the score set by Kohli.
Following Team India, Ranji Trophy and IPL teams also conducted yo-yo test on their players. India A’s team management is likely to conduct the yo-yo test on their players now when it has been reported that they have done away with it.
