India A to Tour New Zealand Ahead of International Fixtures
India A team is all set to play New Zealand at the end of this year before the national team lands in the country to play the limited-overs fixtures.
As per a report in The Indian Express, the board is planning to formulate the idea of sending ‘A’ teams earlier to the places where the senior team is set to tour.
The decision was taken in a meeting attended by Rahul Dravid, coach of India A and U19, BCCI officials and other coaches a various levels working for BCCI.
It will give an idea to the players about the conditions there. Also, it will provide youngsters with exposure before being accelerated to the national side. The ‘A’ team is expected to have few of the national players as well.
New Zealand A side travelled to India to play both unofficial Tests and one-dayers before the start of limited-overs series last year. New Zealand named six players from the ‘A’ squad for the ODI series.
As per the report, India A proposed Australia to play series against them before India travel to the continent to play full-fledged series. However, Cricket Australia rejected the proposal of BCCI.
It also means India’s chances on the tour will depend on what they learn in practice matches. India will play four Tests, three ODIs and three T20Is in Australia in 2018/19.
Following that, the Virat Kohli-led side will travel to New Zealand for five ODIs and five T20Is.
BCCI is paying extra attention to team India’s foreign tours after Test series loss in South Africa. A major reason for India losing the series was the lack of preparation.
Cramped home schedule meant Indian team only landed in South Africa a week ago. A practice game was scheduled to start the very next day when Indian team was to land, but BCCI cancelled it due to logistical issues.
Indian team suffered a defeat in the first two Tests, and finally posted a win on a deadly track in Johannesburg.
Keeping the lack of preparations factor in mind, BCCI has taken massive steps to change team India’s fortune overseas.
Virat Kohli will skip the historic Afghanistan Test to play county cricket ahead of England tour. India A will also travel to England before the series.
The team will consist of senior players, who will later be playing the five-match Test series against hosts. Also, this would give team management an option to choose players from India A ranks as well.
