India Being In The Final Is The Best Result For Women’s Cricket: Heather Knight
It seems India making it to the final of the World Cup is good not only for Indian cricket but for the whole women’s game as well. India’s potential as a market is well-known among the cricketing fraternity and many are hoping that Mithali Raj & Co’s performance in the ongoing World Cup will change women’s cricket for better and England captain Heather Knight is not an exception either.
Speaking on the eve of the final clash, Knight said India making it to the title-decider is the best result for women’s cricket. The England star hoped India’s performance would make BCCI support the women’s game.
“India being in the final is the best result for women’s cricket. There’s massive scope for growth and support from India. And with their team being in the final, BCCI will take note and support women’s cricket the way it should be,” she said.
Well, the BCCI has already extended their support to the Women in Blue by announcing a bonus of INR 50 lakh for each member of the squad irrespective of the result in the final. And Mithali Raj & Co. might get a lot more if they lift the coveted title on Sunday.
Knight further said an Indian Premier League like tournament for women’s would be brilliant. The BCCI had started the lucrative league after MS Dhoni had led India to the World T20 title in 2007 and who knows if the Women in Blue manage to win the title, the Indian board might come up with a tournament for the women.
“A women’s IPL would be brilliant. The BBL and KSL have been really successful and they’ve been a part of pushing women’s cricket forward. You’ve seen players involved in those competitions really develop and perform in this World Cup. All we can keep doing as cricketers is keep improving and keep pushing. The more cricket we play, the more competitive and close games, people will improve quicker,” Knight said.
India captain Mithali Raj also agreed with her English counterpart and said that the women’s cricket in India might change for better if she manages to lead her team to the glory.
“The BCCI now is definitely looking up to women’s cricket. There might be a lot of changes back home. If we go on to win the World Cup. You never know, those changes will benefit the future generations to come.
“Women’s cricket in India will have a brand of its own. It doesn’t require anything else to support it in promoting the sport. This platform and this win will definitely give that edge for young girls to take up sport back home. Maybe, you never know, women’s IPL might be in the pipeline,” Mithali said.
However, Mithali said that the team needs to play more international cricket before coming to IPL.
“I think we have to play more international cricket before we get into IPL. We don’t play enough international games. We haven’t played since November coming into this competition. We can’t get too far ahead of ourselves. England needs to play New Zealand more, Australia more, South Africa more. We need to play more good games, home games from a selfish point of view. IPL might improve cricket in India, but we want to play more international games,” she said.
