New Zealand Vs India 2020: 2nd T20I – India Close To Create History In New Zealand After Another Successful Chasing
The visitors India are close to creating history in winning their maiden T20I series in New Zealand after comfortably beating the hosts in the second T20I of this five-match series at Auckland.
After winning the toss, New Zealand captain Kane Williamson decided to bat first. The Indian bowlers restricted the hosts to 132/5 (20 overs). The visitors chased down that target in 17.3 overs after losing three wickets.
The limited-overs vice-captain Rohit Sharma once again failed to provide a good start as he was dismissed on eight runs. Indian captain Virat Kohli (11) also failed to score big runs. But KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer handled that situation very well and guided the team to the victory.
Rahul and Iyer had the 86 runs partnership for the third wicket. While Iyer lost his wicket on 44 runs (33 balls; only four and three sixes), Rahul smashed his third consecutive T20I half-century. At the end of that successful chasing, Rahul (57 off 50 balls) and Dube (2*) remained not out.
While the right-arm pacer Tim Southee (2/20) took two wickets, leg-spinner Ish Sodhi (1/33) was the only other New Zealand bowler to open the wicket column in that match.
Indian bowlers maintained the discipline line
In the first innings, the openers Martin Guptill and Colin Munro provided a good start as they had the 48 runs partnership. But after the powerplay, the Kiwi batsmen hugely struggled to move their scoreboard quickly. While Guptill (33) and wicketkeeper-batsman Tim Seifert (33*) both scored the highest runs for the team, Munro (26) was the only other batsman to reach the 20-run mark in that innings.
The left-arm spinner Ravindra Jadeja was excellent in that game as he had the bowling figures of 4-0-18-2. Also, Shardul Thakur (1/21), Jasprit Bumrah (1/21) and Shivam Dube (1/16) managed to pick one wicket each.
With this victory, India have taken the 2-0 lead in this five-match series with three to go. The visitors won the first game of this series by six wickets after successfully chasing their highest T20I total outside India.
Some crucial stats review of this match:
i) KL Rahul became the fifth Indian cricketer to score three successive T20I half-centuries. Virat Kohli did this thrice while Rohit Sharma managed to achieve this feat for once. However, there is no Indian batsman to hit half-centuries in four consecutive T20I innings.
ii) Virat Kohli (1,010 runs) became the first batsman to score 1,000 T20I runs at the away venues (only home of opposition).
