India opts to bowl first, Hardik Pandya handed Debut

Playing an ODI at home after almost a year, the Indian captain called for the right side of the gold plated coin and decided to bowl first, keeping in mind the dew factor which will come into play at evening in Dharamsala. Hardik Pandya, who have been with T20 side for almost 10 months now, was handed the debut cap 20 minutes prior to the start of ODI by Kapil Dev, who himself made his Test debut today, 38 years back.

Ajinkya Rahane will be opening the innings along with Rohit Sharma after a period of  two years as Mandeep Singh was not included in the playing XI. Jayant Yadav and Dhawal Kulkarni were the other inclusions from the squad.

“Will have to wait to see as to how much assistance spinners will get. We’re looking at resting players at the right time, considering we have 13 Tests. It gives us an opportunity to test some of the other guys. It’s good to be back in the blues. We don’t have too many ODIs, so have to make the most of it. The guys missing out are Mandeep Singh, Jayant Yadav, and Dhawal Kulkarni”. said Dhoni during the toss.

New Zealand captain Kane Williamson said that batting first was not a bad option for him but he might change his mind when Kiwis bowlers will come out to bowl. Trent Bout and Matt entry were rested from playing XI.

India (Playing XI): Rohit Sharma, Ajinkya Rahane, Virat Kohli, Manish Pandey, Kedar Jadhav, MS Dhoni(w/c), Hardik Pandya, Axar Patel, Amit Mishra, Umesh Yadav, Jasprit Bumrah.

New Zealand (Playing XI): Martin Guptill, Tom Latham, Kane Williamson(c), Ross Taylor, Luke Ronchi(w), Corey Anderson, James Neesham, Mitchell Santner, Tim Southee, Ish Sodhi, Doug Bracewell
