Ishant Sharma led Indian XI made the full use of India’s second practice match at Adelaide as they ended the day 1 of the two day match against Cricket Australia XI at 99-2 when the stumps were drawn.
Murali Vijay looked solid during his unbeaten knock of 39 and shares an unbroken partnership of 63 with skipper Virat Kohli who is batting on 30 when the day came to an end. Shikhar Dhawan failed again as he was dismissed for a Golden duck off Josh Lalor in the second over of the innings. Cheteshwar Pujara looked in good touch during his 41 ball 22 and was dismissed by Lalor, Courtesy a stunner by Ryan Carters at first slip, who also dropped Virat Kohli’s catch off the next ball.
Earlier, chossing to bat, the Cricket Australia batsmen struggled to negate the threat provided by Mohammad Shami and Varun Aaron with the new ball. Carters was the first to go when he nicked Shami straight to Dhawan at first slip before Aaron castled CA XI skipper Ashton Turner for a duck. Soon Matthew Short was dismissed by Shami which made Alex Keath join Jordon Silk in the middle. Silk looked in a tremendous touch as he played with an elegance before his 71 run partnership for the fourth wicket with Keath was ended by Aaron who had Silk caught by Raina in the slips for a well made 58.
Leggie Karn Sharma had Keath caught at the short-leg by Pujara in the very next over. Jake Doran and Seb Gotch tried to consolidate the innings with a 49 run partnership before Karn sent back Doran for 25 and within no time Aaron cleaned up Evan Gulbis for 1. Indian bowlers failed to dismiss the tailenders Lalor, Jorge Pattison and Sam Rainbird quickly as some lusty blows from Gotch towards the end propelled them to 243.
Varun Aaron was the pick of the Indian bowlers with figures of 4-41 and Karn Sharma finished with a figures of 3-54.
Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma joined the team during the 42nd over and it was the reason why Ishant Sharma was asked to lead the team. R Ashwin, Bhuvneshwar Kumar were rested after the first practice match as Ravindra Jadeja and Umesh Yadav were included instead of them in this match.
