Team India created a unique record in the limited overs format during the 2nd ODI against West Indies. The visitors pocketed the rain washed game comfortably at the Queen’s Park Oval, Trinidad. While doing so, they also ended up registering the most number of 300 plus scores in One-day Internationals.
Batting first, the ‘Men in Blue’ posted a total of 310/5 in the first innings of the game which was reduced to a 43 overs contest after a rain delay. This was India’s 96th 300+ total and helped them surpass Australia, who have 95 300 plus scores in ODIs. India’s first 300-plus total came against Pakistan in Sharjah in 1996.
The other teams who posted 300+ scores in ODIs as follows: Australia 95, South Africa 77, Pakistan 68, Sri Lanka 62, England 57 and New Zealand 51.
Ajinkya Rahane with a knock of 103 runs off 104 balls led the way for Team India. Opener Shikhar Dhawan and Virat Kohli also scored solid half-centuries to help the total propel past the 300-runs mark. The start was delayed, as rain filled clouds once again threatened to abandon the game. But, fortunately, match as able to resume, but with a loss of five overs in each innings.
The openers –Ajinkya Rahane and Shikhar Dhawan – gave a smooth start to the proceedings and went on to add 114 off just 18.2 overs before the hosts tasted the first breakthrough of the day as right-arm spinner Ashley Nurse had Dhawan (63 runs from 59 balls) stumped.
Kohli later joined Rahane and raced towards his half-century, smashing 87 runs off 66 deliveries with four boundaries and an equal number of sixes. There was also a slight experiment in the batting order after Rahane’s dismissal in the 34th over. Hardik Pandya came ahead of MS Dhoni and Yuvraj Singh for some slog overs bashing. The move did not work, as Pandya lost his wicket cheaply.
In response, the hosts could manage only 205 for the loss of six wickets in 43 overs giving India a victory by a huge 105 runs margin. Barring opener Shai Hope (81 from 88 balls), no one could really make a significant contribution.
