India U-19 Squad For World Cup To Be Named Tomorrow
The Venkatesh Prasad-led junior selection panel will announce the India U19 squad for the Junior World Cup tomorrow (December 3), a report in TOI suggests.
Currently, India Blue and Sri Lanka Board President’s XI players are playing the final of the U19 Challenger Trophy, and the performances of players in the tournament will be the barometer for selection.

However, players like Prithvi Shaw, Shubham Gill, Abhishek Sharma, Himanshu Rana, Rahul Chahar and Ishan Porel are expected to retain their place in the U19 side. While Shaw is expected to lead the team in the World Cup, Gill has already made it to the India A team and was released by the junior team management to play Ranji Trophy last week.
Abhishek Sharma was the first captain of the current lot of players who led the team to Asia Cup victory in 2016. Himanshu Rana missed out on selection in previous World Cup and is expected to represent the country in World Cup this time. Coming to Chahar, he has done well for India U19 and also has IPL experience, which makes him a strong contender.
Delhi’s Anuj Rawat and Gujarat’s Siddhart Desi, who have done well at Ranji Trophy level, could miss out on selection as they could not perform well in the selection tournament. While Anuj could just score 32 runs in the first three games, Desai could just pick three wickets in first two matches he played.
The team will fly to New Zealand under the tutelage of their coach Rahul Dravid. India U19 face Australia U19 in their first game of the tournament on January 14 at Bay Oval. Their next two contests will be against Papua New Guinea U19 and Zimbabwe U19 at the same venue.
The camp for the tournament will take place right from the day squad is announced. Players like Prithvi Shaw and Ishan Porel have been allowed to skip camp to play Ranji Trophy. However, a final decision on Porel is yet to come out.
