Former England spinner Monty Panesar has expressed his delight after Australia’s massive 333-run win over India in the first Test of the Border-Gavaskar series.
The left-arm spinner, who played a pivotal role in England’s historic series win in India in 2012, was roped in by Cricket Australia (CA) to help the Australian players on how to tackle Indian spinners Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja. He also trained Matt Renshaw and Steve O’Keefe to perform well on Indian pitches. However, Panesar’s coaching stint did not pan out as planned.
The Englishman trained Renshaw and O’Keefe only for two days before being sacked by CA. He also didn’t travel to Dubai, where the Australian team practiced at the ICC’s academy to get accustomed to the Indian pitches.
On the other hand, the services of former Indian player, Sridharan Sriram, was retained by CA. Sriram also travelled to Dubai and is presently with the team in India.
“I feel both of them have done really well, they showed good temperament and skill to adapt on Indian pitches,” said Panesar, who is playing grade cricket in Sydney.
Speaking over his two-day stint as a consultant, he said:
“I would like to get involved for more than 2 days since I feel coaching is about getting to know the players and giving your time to understand them as people. Had the consultancy been a little longer, it would have been more of a benefit and they did consider but they already had Sriram in place. I was grateful for the opportunity.”
