India vs Australia 2018: Shikhar Dhawan Rues Fielding Errors After Brisbane Loss

Opening batsman Shikhar Dhawan rued the missed chances on field after Australia beat India by 4 runs in the first T20I on Wednesday.

The odds were firmly stacked against Australia. The hosts were not only missing their batting mainstays David Warner and Steve Smith due to bans but were also struggling to do well in recent times. Prior to the latest game, they had lost their last four T20Is. On the other hand, India arrived in Australia after a 3-0 win over reigning world T20 champions Windies.

However, form and other obstacles mattered little as Australia beat their fancied opponents by 4 runs to take the lead in three-match series.

Batting first, Australia were 158 for 4 in 17 overs when rain intervened. India were then given a revised total of 174.  Shikhar Dhawan’s blistering fifty kept India in hunt but they eventually lost the game.

After the game, Dhawan insisted poor fielding cost India the game.

“It was a good game of cricket. It was a very close match and both the teams played really well. We got a lot of confidence from this game and will take it forward to the next game,” Dhawan said.

“Of course missed chances in the field had their own impacts. The dropped catch and missed run out opportunity but that is part and parcel of the game and we took it in our stride. We conceded a few extra runs (in the middle overs) but otherwise we played well,” he added.

After losing Rohit Sharma cheaply,  Dhawan and KL Rahul shared a 46-run stand to steady the ship. But just when it looked India would take control of the game, Adam Zampa changed the course of the game by taking two wickets.

The leg-spinner first broke the stand between Dhawan and Rahul by dismissing the latter. He then scalped for big fish Virat Kohli (4) to put Australia well on top. Dhawan had a word of praise for Zampa as he felt his twin strikes changed the game.

“I knew we had to score some big runs in those overs and I was looking for that when I got out. He (Zampa) was influential in this game and his statistics were very good. We needed momentum and he took wickets that moment. From there the game got a bit more away from us when Rahul and Kohli were dismissed. He bowled well and with a lot of control,” said Dhawan.

Dhawan is now looking forward to playing the second T20I at Melbourne, a venue where his family lives.

“Melbourne is like a homecoming. I live there, my family lives there, so I am looking forward to enjoying there. There is no extra motivation as such. I just want to go and enjoy myself,” Dhawan signed off.
