India vs England 2016: Karun Nair’s Moment Of Glory And Pride!
The Man from Karnataka came in the series as a replacement for Rohit Sharma, but he still couldn’t make it into the team until Ajinkya Rahane was injured.
There he was receiving his Cap making his debut in the 3rd Test.
The first outing was not very fruitful for him as he was run out in his very first innings.
We have seen the players getting run out in their first match, and have gone on to make it big – MS Dhoni is the best example.
Coming back to Karun, even in the 4th test of the series, 2nd for Karun, he wasn’t able to get a big score.
With India winning the series and coming to the 5th Test which might have been his last innings in for some time with the regulars like Ajinkya and Rohit coming in for the series against Australia; Karun Nair had a last opportunity to make his impression.
And boy he had a statement to make!!
Coming into bat at 5 as Pujara and Kohli went cheaply, he stuck in with KL Rahul who on the other hand was playing an excellent innings.
Karun settled down and played his game while Rahul was going for his double ton.
On 199 runs, Rahul played a loose shot in the desperation to get to a double ton and threw his wicket away.
Everyone was busy appreciating Rahul’s innings, but Karun Nair had some other plans, he had a page to turn in the history books.
Something was gonna happen which did not happen in last 12 years 8 months. He Completed his century – maiden one – and it was just the starting of what was to come.
There were an array of Sweep shots be it conventional, reverse, paddle sweep – you name it and he played it.
Stepping out getting to the ball and playing it big. He did it all.
Partnering with Ashwin he set up a nice lead for India, he completed his 200 and showed Rahul how it’s done!
Well, most would have thought that India would declare soon but Karun Nair and more importantly Kohli and co. had different plans.
India decided to extend their lead and went hard in the 3rd Session of the 5th Test. Those legs of Karun Nair didn’t look tired at all after scoring a 200.
He was Running, scoring or even, at times, we can say toying with the English bowlers.
Soon he Completed his 250 runs. But then he got a gift from the Indian team and Kohli, he got the license to got for the triple Century and that gave his that push that was needed.
And then as we say the rest is history!
He was all over the English bowlers smashing fours and sixes and within few minutes, he was close to 300 runs.
He looked determined and calm out there, didn’t look like he will make a blunder like Rahul.
Ticking ones and twos, there he was at 299 on the crease.
The crowd got behind him, the whole stadium was cheering but he was focused.
With the next ball, he hit it for a four and there it was – Karun Nair moment of Glory.
His moment of pride, he went on to raise his bat and kissed the Indian emblem on the helmet – Karun Nair, only the 2nd player to get a triple hundred for India. And only the 3rd player to convert his maiden hundred into a triple Hundred.
