The match at the Rose Bowl started India’s downfall in the series. After losing the previous Test, the England team was under huge pressure and they responded in style. Led by the in-form Joe Root (167) and Gary Ballance (156), the hosts posted a mammoth total of 569 runs.
The Indian team could score only 330 runs in reply, handing England a huge lead of 239 runs. England declared their second innings on 205 runs, setting India an improbable target of 445 runs. Under pressure for the first time on the tour, the Indian team failed to put up a brave show and were dismissed for only 178 runs.
