India vs England 2016 – Player Ratings Of Virat Kohli’s Men

At the moment, the Indian team is absolutely unstoppable as an astute leader seems to have done wonders for them. The success of this belligerent young side isn’t restricted to its leader alone, but now, they have an off spinner, who at the height of his powers, is undoubtedly the best bowler in Tests at present.

The series victory over England offered several positives for Virat Kohli-led team India as the rookies stole the show with emphatic performances. After winning the series 4-0, we go through the ratings for each and every member of the Indian squad who participated in the series.

  1. Gautam Gambhir (1/5):

The veteran opener might have well played his last international game for India, as he didn’t have a fruitful outing in the only Test he played at Rajkot. Gambhir was dismissed for 29 and 0 in the first Test and if he was to prolong his career, a big knock was the only way. Fair to say, with other openers doing well, one might not hear the name of Gambhir again.

  1. Murali Vijay (3/5):

With 357 runs in 5 games, Vijay could have easily scored more, as inconsistencies got the better of him. Nevertheless, he played two crucial knocks at Rajkot and Mumbai with two tons to his credit. The fact that he got two centuries and scored 357 runs throughout the series means he had mediocre outings in the six innings in between. Nevertheless, Vijay would be eager to improve against Australia.

  1. KL Rahul (3.5/5):

Like Vijay, Rahul too was a victim of inconsistent scores as out of the total of 233 runs he scored in three games, 199 came in one innings alone. Nevertheless, considering the magnitude of the innings, it was a great one for the Indians. Against Australia, the key for Rahul will be to remain patient and not probe too much outside the off stump.

Cheteshwar Pujara

  1. Cheteshwar Pujara (4/5):

Pujara is an absolute run-machine in India and this was another productive series for the Saurashtra batting star. Pujara began his series with a flurry as he scored two centuries in the first two games. A rash shot meant he missed out on a certain century in Mohali. Having said that, with 401 runs in eight innings, Pujara deserves to be rated highly as he was the third highest run-getter in the series on either sides.

  1. Virat Kohli (5/5):

While Kohli would have earned a 4.5 for his phenomenal batting, it’s his leadership that makes him earn full marks. As a batsman, Kohli was the leading run-getter with 655 runs in eight innings at an average of 109.16. He scored two massive hundreds at Vizag and Mumbai, the latter being among the finest double centuries of all time. Captaincy wise, his tactical changes and use of the pacers remained top notch.

  1. Ajinkya Rahane (1/5):

Probably, the most forgettable outing for Rahane in a Test series. The Mumbai star struggled as he ended the series with just 63 runs in three games, at a sorry average of 12.6. Rahane seemed to be in clear discomfort against spin and that’s an issue towards which he would have to emphasize on for quite a bit.

  1. Karun Nair (4/5):

You cannot ask for anything more from a guy who scores 320 runs in three innings. Considering his misfortune of being run-out in his debut game, Nair made heads turn with a magnificent knock of 303* at Chennai. He became just the second Indian to get into the elite 300-club. With this series, Nair has well earned a confirmed spot in the full strength team.

Wriddhiman Saha practicing.

  1. Wriddhiman Saha (1.5/5):

Saha played just the first two Tests before an injury ruled him out of the series. Fair to say, he had a poor series as he could make just 49 runs in two games. The Bengal wicket-keeper is bound to face severe competition now as Parthiv Patel has done so well.

  1. Parthiv Patel (3.5/5):

Patel, making his comeback after eight years, was good with the bat as he scored a couple of half-centuries while opening the innings. From the keeping front, there is still scope for improvement but he surely didn’t disappoint anyone with his displays.

  1. Ravichandran Ashwin (4.5/5):

Another series, another fascinating performance from India’s biggest asset in Tests. Ashwin made an even stronger case for his batting at no. 6, with 306 runs at an average of over 43. The four half-centuries which Ashwin made were all priceless and to go with his 28 wickets, this was a mighty fine series for the lanky off-spinner. With 28 wickets, he ended as the leading wicket-taker on either side.

  1. Ravindra Jadeja (4.5/5):

Jadeja, out of nowhere, turned a tame draw into a victory for India at Chennai. With a ten- wicket match haul at Chennai, Jadeja took 26 wickets in five games at an average of 25.84, almost five less than that of Ashwin, the leading wicket-taker. Most importantly, Jadeja preyed on Alastair Cook six times, the same batsman who tormented India in 2012. Batting wise, he scored 224 at an average above 37 including a match-winning 90 at Mohali.

Jayant Yadav in action.

  1. Jayant Yadav (4/5):

Jayant couldn’t have asked for a better debut series as he proved the significance of an all- rounder in the ranks. His century at Mumbai and partnership with Virat Kohli turned the tide on England. Bowling wise, Jayant took nine wickets in three tests as he perfectly complemented Ashwin and Jadeja.

Amit Mishra appeals.

  1. Amit Mishra (1/5):

Amit Mishra seemed terribly out of sorts in the two Tests he featured in at Rajkot at Chennai. Being the leg-spinner, it was his duty to pick wickets when handed the ball. Five wickets in four innings at an average of 55 and a strike rate of 91 wasn’t expected from him.

  1. Mohammed Shami (4/5):

Arguably, the best pacer on either sides, Shami struck for India whenever he was entrusted with responsibility. Be it the new ball, middle-overs or with the old ball, Shami found a way to get on top of the batsmen. With 10 wickets in three games at an average of 25.20, Shami stood out with his performances. His spell at Mohali on a decent batting surface made the difference in the first innings as England were bowled out cheaply.

Umesh Yadav

  1. Umesh Yadav (2.5/5):

Stats might often mislead, and there is no better instance than this to prove. With eight wickets in five games at an average of 58, one would criticize Umesh Yadav but not after understanding his true contribution. In the first game, atleast three catches were dropped off his bowling and that continued for the rest of the series. He bowled his heart out whenever he was handed out the task and formed a lethal partnership with Shami.

  1. Bhuvneshwar Kumar (2.5/5):

Judging Bhuvneshwar is a tedious task, as not much could be expected from him with just one game he featured in on a Mumbai deck that had nothing for the pacers. Nevertheless, he put on a display of fine swing bowling in the second innings as he scalped Keaton Jennings on just the second ball of the innings.

  1. Ishant Sharma (3/5):

Making his comeback to the team, Ishant Sharma had a fruitful outing at Chennai with three wickets in the match. He dismissed Jennings, Jos Buttler and Jonny Bairstow in the match and all these wickets were at crucial junctures. For a man making his comeback, these are fine figures indeed.
