India vs England 2016/17, 2nd ODI, Cuttack: Virat Kohli-Led India’s Predicted XI

Going into the second ODI at Cuttack, England’s morale will be completely shattered as at Pune, India made a daring comeback, literally out of nowhere. Placed at a precarious 63-4, in pursuit of 351, skipper Virat Kohli and Kedar Jadhav got together for one of the most inspiring partnerships in ODI cricket history. The 200-run stand between the duo got India back in the chase and from there on, the lower middle-order cautiously got the team home.

Given that this is just a three-match series, the next game at Cuttack is a Do or Die fixture for England. A loss here will mean another series loss in England, and the wait to win one in India will continue since 1984.

Keeping in mind the next ODI, we go through the predicted Indian XI for the second ODI:

  1. KL Rahul:

Playing just his fourth ODI at Pune, Rahul got stuck in and failed to get going on a flaccid track. He was castled on by a beauty from David Willey, as the left-arm pacer exposed a massive gap between Rahul’s bat and pad. Despite a failure in the first game, Rahul is expected to retain his place.

  1. Shikhar Dhawan:

This is a very tricky situation for Shikhar Dhawan. With just two ODIs left before India’s defence of the Champions Trophy commences, Dhawan needs a big score under his belt to regain his confidence. On his day, he can tear into bowling attacks single-handedly, and knowing his reputation as a big tournament player, Dhawan will be backed by the management. It is just a matter of time for him to strike form in the middle.

Virat Kohli.
  1. Virat Kohli (c):

Kohli has been piling up centuries for fun off late and he began 2017 on a similar note with yet another century in a successful run-chase. Despite having a few reputed names around, Kohli is still the spine of India’s batting, and if the hosts are to wrap the series up at Cuttack itself, the Indian skipper will have to come good. Fielding wise however, Kohli needs to be a little more cautious as he fumbled in the outfield on a couple of occasions.

Yuvraj Singh
  1. Yuvraj Singh:

One man who would be livid with himself after the first ODI would be Yuvraj Singh. It was a pitch tailor made for him, and in his favor, he got off to a fluent start as he pulled Willey for a six and a boundary. However, Yuvraj fell to the fatal leg-side trap as he nicked off one around his pads. Time is running out for Yuvraj and a big score is the need of the hour for the iconic all-rounder.

  1. MS Dhoni (wk):

Now that he has left captaincy, there is going to be even more spotlight on Dhoni. Every inning played by him from now on will be minutely analyzed and the former captain will be put under the microscope. He was comprehensively beaten for pace at Pune and ended up offering a regulation catch. At Cuttack, he’ll be eager to get himself in and then look for the extravagant strikes in order to excel.

  1. Kedar Jadhav:

India’s man of the moment, Kedar Jadhav has achieved overnight stardom with an epic knock in the first game. Jadhav could well be the solution to India’s woes in the finishing department given his skills to play the big shots from the very offset. The way he played at Pune, Jadhav will be quite confident about yet another good show, and if he begins middling the ball from the start, England are in for some serious trouble.

Jubilant Hardik Pandya in action
  1. Hardik Pandya:

The maturity with which he batted at Pune was stupendous to say the least as he had great control over his instincts. With the ball as well, he struck on two crucial occasions to dismiss danger men Eoin Morgan and Jos Buttler. Given his form, he would be itching to prove his tag of an all-rounder.

Ravindra Jadeja.
  1. Ravindra Jadeja:

Bowling wise, Ravindra Jadeja was simply superb as he gave nothing away and tied down the English batting line-up. He picked up the all-important wicket of Jason Roy and the accuracy with which he bowled was phenomenal indeed. The best aspect was that Jadeja bowled so well on a pitch that had nothing for the spinners. If Cuttack offers him even a bit of assistance, he could be all over the England batting.

  1. Ravichandran Ashwin:

With the ball, Ashwin had a forgettable outing as he was taken apart for 63 in 8 overs. To be fair to Ashwin though, the wicket was a graveyard for bowlers and his choice of containing the batsmen wasn’t too inappropriate either as he looked to stem the run flow. The tall off- spinner would want some assistance from the strip at Cuttack in the second ODI.

  1. Umesh Yadav:

Despite coming under heavy onslaught from the visitors at the death, Umesh deserves another chance considering his recent form. He was the best pacer on either sides during the ODI series against New Zealand. He though, bowled reasonably well with the new ball, and would look to go a step beyond in Cuttack by striking an early blow.

Jasprit Bumrah says he concentrates on his performance and not on his selection.
  1. Jasprit Bumrah:

The game at Pune was Bumrah’s first instance of enduring a poor outing for India. Bumrah remains the team’s go to man at the death given his skills to execute yorkers. From his end though, Bumrah should be a little more disciplined with the ball as he was guilty of delivering a few full tosses, which yielded free hits for England.
