Riding on a brilliant last over from Jasprit Bumrah, India defeated England by five runs in the second T20I to level the three-match series 1-1.
Chasing 144 on a pitch that was tipped to become tough for batting with the passage of time, England were in a spot of bother when Ashish Nehra had dismissed both English openers Sam Billings and Jason Roy on successive balls. A 43-run partnership between Joe Root and Eoin Morgan followed by a 52-run stand between the latter and Ben Stokes placed the visitors in a comfortable position. However, Stokes’ dismissal in the 17th over and a brilliant 18th over by Jasprit Bumrah, where he conceded only three brought India right back into the game. England then scored 16 in the penultimate over and needed only eight runs from the final over. With Root and Jos Buttler at the crease, the match was very much tilted in England’s favour but Bumrah dismissed both of them in the final over and conceded only two to take India home.
Earlier, a 47-ball 71 from KL Rahul propelled India to a respectable 144 after the Indian batsmen faltered for the second time in a row. Virat Kohli, who opened the innings again, was looking in good touch and raced to 21 off only 14 balls before he was undone by a slower delivery from Chris Jordan. Suresh Raina (7) and Yuvraj Singh (4) were dismissed in quick succession before a 56-run partnership between Rahul and Manish Pandey steadied the ship. However, once Rahul was dismissed, the Indian team failed to get going and were restricted to only 144 in their allotted 20 overs.
