India vs England 2016/17 3rd ODI, Eden Gardens: Player Ratings

Having won the toss, India captain Virat Kohli asked England to bat first on a pitch helpful to seamers. England, to their credit, played well and put on a challenging total of 321 runs on the board. For visitors, it was all about team effort as Jason Roy and Jonny Bairstow, who replaced Joe Root, chipped in with half-centuries.

Ben Stokes then provided a late impetus to England’s innings, smashing 57 off 39 while Chris Woakes played a cameo of 34 runs in double quick time.

In reply, India fell five runs short as they managed to score 316 runs in their allotted 50 overs. For hosts, Kedar Jadhav was the star as he top scored with 90 crucial runs, while Kohli and Hardik Pandya scored half-centuries.

Here are player ratings of the Indian team:

Ajinkya Rahane (1):

The comeback man Ajinkya Rahane, who replaced Shikhar Dhawan, failed as he scored just one. Rahane faced just six deliveries and was castled by David Willey, as he tried to drive an in-swinging delivery which saw his off-stump being disturbed in the second over of the chase.

KL Rahul (1):

It was the same story for Rahane’s fellow opener Rahul as the Karnataka lad continued his struggle in ODIs. Rahul scored just 11 runs before being removed by Jos Buttler. This was the third consecutive time he failed to get going and he’ll be looking over his shoulders as the return of Rohit Sharma looms large.

Virat Kohli (6):

India skipper Virat Kohli scored a brilliant fifty before edging one to Jos Buttler off Ben Stokes. Again, it was a bounce that did the trick for England. He scored eight boundaries in his 55-run innings. All in all, he was India’s best batsman on the night. As captain, he once again tinkered a bit too much with the field which shows tactical ineptness. His bowling changes were at times puzzling as Bhuvneshwar Kumar failed to complete his 10 overs on a pitch that assisted seamers. He was also responsible for a failed review. Kohli really needs to learn how to use DRS as soon as he can, for team’s sake.

Yuvraj Singh (6):

The comeback man, who smashed an impressive 150 in the last game, looked out of sorts on Sunday. He was hit on the chest by Jake Ball as he misread the length. Just when it looked he was set, the Punjab lad threw his wicket away (on 45) by flicking the ball straight to mid-wicket. Should he be the number 4 in Champions Trophy? I hope not.

On the bowling front, Yuvraj Singh chipped in with three overs, conceding 17 runs.

MS Dhoni (5):

The former Indian skipper scored 25 runs off 36 balls. His innings comprised of one four and a six but he could manage at a strike-rate of just 69.44. Moreover, he was steady behind the stumps and did his job well.

Kedar Jadhav (8):

India’s hero in the first ODI, Kedar Jadhav struggled to come to terms with this pitch. Even though he scored 90 runs, he was consistently beaten by the bounce and for the most part got away as he could have been out on numerous occasions. Yes, he played a very important knock which brought India on the brink of a win, but couldn’t finish the game.

Hardik Pandya (8):

Hardik Pandya, on a helpful pitch, was the pick of bowlers for India. He finished the match with figures of 10-1-49-3. As this was last ODI for India before the Champions Trophy match against Pakistan on June 3, 2017, Pandya has made a strong case to start as India’s all-rounder in England.

He even contributed with the bat, scoring 56 off 43 balls, with 4 fours and two sixes. His 106-run partnership with Jadhav was crucial but in the end, the duo couldn’t finish the game.

Ravindra Jadeja (7):

The Indian all-rounder had an off day by his standards as he went for 62 runs in his 10 allotted overs. He, however, picked up two wickets in form of English openers which put breaks on visitors’ scoring rate in middle-overs.

Ravichandran Ashwin (3):

A terrible outing for India’s star off-spinner as he didn’t even finish his quota of overs. In nine overs, Ashwin conceded 66 runs with nothing to show in wicket’s column.

On the batting front, when the whole of India depended on Ashwin, he played a bizarre shot with Jadhav at the other end to get out for just one.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar (6):

India’s go-to man at the death was expensive as the duo of Ben Stokes and Chris Woakes went after him. Kumar conceded 56 runs in eight overs at an economy of 7 runs per over. He should have bowled a bit better.

Jasprit Bumrah (6):

Jasprit Bumrah was the least impressive of all Indian bowlers. Neither his lines were apt for this pitch, nor his mindset clear enough. He did get a wicket of Moeen Ali with a bouncer to redeem himself, but he needs to improve and improve quickly, if he wants to be the part of the playing XI in Champions Trophy.
