India vs England Combined ODI Eleven

The ODI series between India and England ended past Sunday (January 22nd), with the visitors registering the consolation win at Eden Gardens by five runs. Wins in Pune and Cuttack saw Virat Kohli sealing his first ODI series as a full-time captain after he led India to a 4-0 victory over England in the Tests.

The limited-over series, however, had a history of its own to tell. In the three matches, which was largely dominated by batsmen, more than 2000 runs (2027) were scored. The tally is also the most recorded in a three-match bilateral tie in ODI’s ever, surpassing the previous record of around 1800 being scored in the Afro-Asia cup in 2006.

There were many positives and few lessons to be learnt for players, bowlers specifically. From Virat Kohli to Ben Stokes, from Kedar Jadhav to Jason Roy, few of the individuals stood apart.

So, at Sportzwiki, we shed light on the best of the performers in the series and bring you the combined eleven from both India and England.

  1. Jason Roy
Jason Roy.

Arguably, the most consistent of the six openers used from both sides, Jason Roy is surely the first choice opener in the list. The right-handed batsman troubled the Indian bowlers from the outset, with his conventional cuts and good looking pull shots. He, in all three matches, scored the fifties (73, 82 & 65), but unfortunately, couldn’t convert any one of them into a big knock.

Among all English players, he was the only one to cross 200 run mark (220) in the series at an astonishing average of 73.33.

2. Joe Root

Joe Root

Having mentioned earlier about the failures of openers to score runs on the tour, England batsman Joe Root will join his team-mate Roy at the top. Without a doubt, one of most technically sound batsman from either team, Root had his imprint on the Indian bowlers during the first two ODI’s, before he was left out in the third. His scores of 78 and 54 toiled both seamers and spinners, while averaged 66 and registered runs at a strike-rate of 88.

3. Virat Kohli (C)

Virat Kohli

Indian captain Virat Kohli will be the ideal number three batsman to be listed in any side, at least in limited-overs cricket. The right-handed batsman played a valiant knock of 120 runs in the Pune One Dayer and helped India chase down a mammoth total of 351 runs. He also played a gritty knock of 55 on a greener track at Eden Gardens but failed to lead his side to attain a whitewash. In three matches, Virat amassed 185 runs at an average of 61.66 and a strike-rate of 106.

4. Yuvraj Singh

Yuvraj Singh.

It was a tough pick, as both, Yuvraj Singh and Eoin Morgan deserved a spot, but given the performance of Indian veteran during the Cuttack ODI, he made the list. The left-handed batsman scored a brilliant 150 in the second One Dayer, guiding hosts to register a series win over England.

In the first and third ODI too, the southpaw seemed in his old midas touch, pulling and driving the ball as smoothly as ever. The numbers made his return look more impressive, with his record showing 210 runs at an average of 70.

5. Mahendra Singh Dhoni (WK)

MS Dhoni.

Looking at the performances of both wicket-keepers, Mahendra Singh Dhoni had eclipsed Jos Buttler in this series. Considering his match-changing innings of 134 in the Cuttack ODI, he joined hands with Yuvraj Singh and lift India out of an early trouble, and later helped them to seal the series.

Behind the stumps, the former skipper was impressive as ever, involving in four dismissals. And not to forget his ‘Decision reviewing’ ability, which he nearly nailed it in the series. He helped his numbers to take a rise, by scoring a total of 165 runs in three innings at an average of 55.

6. Ben Stokes

Ben Stokes

England’s most promising prospect, Ben Stokes would book the all-rounder’s spot in the side. The right-arm pacer and a left-arm hard hitter, Stokes spoiled India’s hope of sweeping them in the final ODI. With the ball, he was crucial in breaking important partnerships at an important time. He first dismissed Virat Kohli to break hosts confidence, and then removed Hardik Pandya and Ravichandran Ashwin to help his side clinch maiden won on tour,

With batting he was equally efficient, scoring a quickfire unbeaten 57 off just 39 balls. In the series, he notched up 120 runs and picked up 5 wickets.

7. Kedar Jadhav

Kedar Jadhav

Not to everyone’s surprise, Kedar would make the list after his dream run in the runs. The pocket size dynamite hammered England bowlers all over the park in Pune scoring match winning 122 runs, even after suffering cramps. He repeated heroics in Kolkata also, but couldn’t pull off a win for his side. He scored 90 off 75 balls and kept India in the chase until the penultimate ball of the match, where was found a fielder and got out.

His performance brought laurels from the experts and the pundits. He was India’s highest run-scorer also, registering 232 runs at an average of 77.33.

8. Chris Woakes

Chris Woakes

England’s highest wicket-taker with six scalps, Chris Woakes will be the first bowler to make into the list. With the new ball, he dismantled India’s top-order in all three of the games, especially in Cuttack, where he removed Rahul, Virat and Dhawan in the span of two overs. Though a bit vulnerable in death overs, Woakes defended six of last four balls at Eden Gardens to earn his side a consolation win in the series.

9. Ravindra Jadeja

Ravindra Jadeja.

Not the highest wicket-taker but surely the most economical bowler in the series, Ravindra Jadeja is the only spinner in the list. With his ability to contain runs from one end, Jadeja has helped the bowlers on the other end to extract a wicket with the pressure he maintained. In all matches he got rid off Jason Roy, and more importantly at the right time, which helped Indian to make a comeback in the game. Jadeja in the series took five wickets at an economy of 5.23.

10. Bhuvneshwar Kumar

Bhuvneshwar Kumar

The swing king of Indian team right now, Bhuvneshwar would be included for his skill set to outsmart any batsman on his day. Though with just one wicket to his name in the series, his selection might not look viable but looking how hard England batters found to score runs off him, anyone would pick him.

In one of the two ODI’s he played, he proved his worth as a death bowler in the Cuttack match. With his smart thinking to ball yorkers outside the off stump, he made well-settled batsmen look like a tailender.

11. Jake Ball

Jake Ball

Genuinely pacey and tall enough to extract bounce from any track, England’s Jake Ball would be the last bowler in the list. The lanky speedster did get on the nerves of the Indian batsmen on the tour, either troubling them with some extra bounce or the moving ball. He in total bagged five wickets at an economy of 6.76.
