India vs England First Test Day 4 : Four Talking Points!

It is stumps on day 4. Earlier in the day, India were bowled out for a total of 488 runs. Virat Kohli got out in a shocking fashion but it was Ravichandran Ashwin who kept the scoreboard ticking with an important 70 lower down the order. England came out to bat after bowling India out and their openers did justice to their job. England extended their lead to 163 runs without the loss of any wicket.

Here are 4 talking points of the day :

Kohli’s dismissal : Virat Kohli, Indian skipper, got out in an unusual fashion on day 4 of the first Test at Rajkot on Saturday. Kohli was sent back to the pavilion by Adil Rashid as Kohli got out hit wicket. The Indian captain went on the backfoot to play the ball on to the leg side and ended up hitting the stumps in the process. He failed to score big which could have seen India take the lead on day 4.

Should Ashwin bat higher up the order in the next match : Ravichandran Ashwin scored a well-made 70 runs lower down the order to reduce England’s lead to 49 runs. Now the big question is should Ashwin bat higher up the order in the next match? There is no doubt that Ashwin has worked a lot on his batting to improve the same. But Ashwin’s current position is perfect for the right arm spinner because if he goes up the order the recognized batsmen who will have to go down the order may feel demoralized. It will doubt the ability of the recognized batsmen who are there in the team for the purpose of scoring runs. But Ashwin getting runs lower down the order is definitely a good sign for India as it is important for the tail enders to contribute.

Adil Rashid, the best spinner in the match so far : Adil Rashid has bowled superbly on day 4 in the first test match at Rajkot against India. He took the important wicket of Virat Kohli and also picked up two other wickets taking his tally to four. Rashid also bowled at an economy rate of 3.68 giving away 114 runs in 31 overs. The spinner was clearly the pick of the bowlers and was instrumental in bowling out India 49 runs short of England’s total.

Haseeb Hameed impressed : Haseeb Hameed impressed in the second innings as he flew to 62 runs from in just 116 balls which included 5 boundaries and one six. Alastair Cook partnered him well as he is also unbeaten on 46 from 107 balls. England extended their lead to 163 runs with 10 wickets remaining. Hameed would look for his century on the next day of play after getting off to a good start.
