India vs New Zealand 1st Test Day 3: Five talking points

India have put themselves in a strong position on the 3rd day of the first Test match at Kanpur by taking a lead of 215 runs with 9 wickets in hand. In their second innings, India are 159 for 1 with Pujara and Vijay batting at the end of Day 3.

New Zealand were bowled out for 262 after excellent bowling performance by Jadeja and Ashwin.

Here we at the five turning points of day 3:

  1. Quick wickets in the first session

At the start of day 3, New Zealand began the day on 152 for 1. The Indian spinners R Jadeja and Ashwin bowled with great control, not allowing the New Zealand batsmen to score runs easily. The first wicket of the session came in the form of Latham who was LBW by Ashwin. In the next over itself, Jadeja picked the wicket of Taylor to bring back Indian team into the match. Kane Williamson was dismissed by an excellent delivery which spun back and clean-bowled the New Zealand captain. Ronchi and Santer steadied the innings for a while before Ronchi got LBW to Jadeja. In the first session, New Zealand scored 76 runs losing 4 wickets.

2. Jadeja’s match winning over

After the lunch interval, Ravindra Jadeja was on fire with the ball. In the 95th over of the innings, the left-handed bowler picked 3 wickets in an over to change the course of the match in favour of India. Mark Craig was dismissed leg before wicket, the next ball R Jadeja dismissed Ish Sodhi LBW and Trent Boult was dismissed caught by Rohit Sharma. It was an excellent display of spin bowling by Jadeja who looked threating and finally finished with figures of 5 for 73 in 34 overs.

3. Good first wicket partnership between KL Rahul and Vijay

The Indian second innings got off to a good start with KL Rahul the aggressive player. KL Rahul attacked the New Zealand spinners and did not allow them to settle. He played some innovative strokes off the spinners coming down the track and also reverse sweep. On the other hand, Murali Vijay showed great defensive technique. At the stroke of tea, KL Rahul was dismissed for 38 ending a 52 runs stand for the first wicket.

4. Unbeaten 2nd wicket stands between Pujara and Vijay

After the fall of KL Rahul wicket, Murali Vijay and Pujara showed their class with the bat. Both of them looked good against the New Zealand spinners. Vijay played attacking strokes against the spinners while Pujara also looked comfortable. Vijay has completed his half-century and is still at the crease on 64 while Pujara completed his half century to put the Indian team in a commanding position. Both of them have put an unbroken stand of 107 runs for the second wicket. With two days left in the game, it leaves a huge task for New Zealand batsmen to save the match on a tough wicket.

5. New Zealand spinners unable to leave an impact

Unlike in the first innings, the New Zealand spinners did not have an impact. Mark Craig went for 4.36 runs per over, Santer went for 2.53 but did not pick any wicket. Ish Sodhi was the only wicket taker for New Zealand. He also went 4.14 runs over. The New Zealand spinners were not consistent and leaked too many runs. With the pitch helpful for the spinners in the next two days, the New Zealand spinners have let the team down and staring a defeat in the first test match. If New Zealand are to comeback in the match, the New Zealand spinners have to bowl much better tomorrow.
