Dinesh Karthik, who is known for his acrobatics on the field, has dropped two sitters in the opener of the three-match India vs New Zealand 2019 Twenty20 International (T20I) series during New Zealand innings on Wednesday (February 6) at Westpac Stadium in Wellington. However, in between, his presence of mind reaped the rewards at the boundary ropes when he grabbed a stunning catch in his second attempt.
Earlier, when Indian interim skipper Rohit Sharma won the toss, he opted to field first, but the Kiwis batsmen redeemed the opportunity by stitching an 86-run partnership in just 8.2 overs. However, the visitors’ bowlers have pulled things back in 13th over.
Meanwhile, on the first ball of the 11th over, Karthik dropped a dolly of wicketkeeper-batsman Tim Seifert. The right-handed batter smashed quickfire 43-ball 84. Krunal Pandya looked upset as Karthik puts down a skier at the long-on region. However, it didn’t turn out much costly for India.
Seifert’s blazing knock included seven fours and six sixes before being castled by left-arm paceman Khaleel Ahmed.
Before discussing the terrific catch, Karthik puts down a simple catch of Ross Taylor on the third delivery of 18th over. The full toss delivery from Hardik Pandya saw Taylor miscuing a shot. However, Karthik stationed at the deep mid-wicket region made a mess of it.
However, Taylor (23) returned to the pavilion in the space of four balls when Khaleel took a good catch on the bowling of Bhuvneshwar Kumar.
Karthik pouches a blinder:
On the first delivery of 15th over Daryl Mitchell (8) swiped the ball to send it into the top tier. But the slow delivery got better of him. At the long-on region, Karthik pushed the ball back in the playing area while going beyond the boundary ropes. However, his quick reaction saw him diving forward to grab a sensational catch on the bowling of Pandya.
Also, on-field umpires decided to go upstairs, but the body language of Karthik reflects he claimed a clean catch. Following a brief pause, the TV replays suggested there was no issue with the front foot as well.
Meanwhile, the Blacks Caps had set up a target of 220 runs in 20 allotted over. Hosts post 219 for six on the board after losing the toss.
