India thrashed New Zealand by 197 runs to win the first test and take a 1-0 lead in the series. On the first two days, New Zealand did well by restricting Indian batting and playing well both spin bowlers of India. Indian team played excellent cricket in the next three days to win the match. It was all round performance by the Indian team.

India won the toss and elected to bat on the first day. In the first innings Pujara (62) and Vijay (65) steadied the innings for India with important partnership of 112 runs for the second wicket. Rohit Sharma scored 35 runs, Ashwin scored 40 and Jadeja scored 42. The tail of Indian batting in Jadeja and Umesh Yadav extended the first innings to help India to post 318 runs that looked a decent score. In the second innings too, Pujara (78) , Vijay (76) and Rahane scored 40 scored important runs on the 3rd day while Rohit Sharma and Jadeja remained not out on 68 and 50 respectively that helped India to post a formidable target of 434 to New Zealand and dominate the match.
