In the first innings, the New Zealand batsmen negotiated well the Indian spin twins by adopting to sweep shots. While it appeared that they have discovered the way to negotiate spinners, in the second innings exposed their limitation to play good quality spin of Ashwin and Jadeja. On the third day, New Zealand lost 9 wickets for the addition of just 103 runs to be dismissed for 262. After being 255 for 5, the New Zealand batsmen lacked the technique to play good quality spin. In the second innings too except Mitchel Santner and Luke Ronchi, other batsmen failed to negotiate Ashwin and they fell short by 197 runs.
