Visitors South Africa has hugely disappointed in the ongoing Test series against the hosts India. While they have already suffered the series defeat, the third and final Test of this series is still important due to their reputation as well as their commitment to the 2019-21 ICC World Test Championship. Proteas captain Faf du Plessis feels that the South African batsmen need to put big runs in the first innings of the upcoming Ranchi Test to remain in the fight.
In the ongoing India tour, Quinton de Kock-led South Africa fought well in the T20I series against the hosts. The three-match T20I series finished with the 1-1 level status after the visitors went behind by losing the second T20I.
Experienced Faf du Plessis returned to the Test squad in this tour. However, the inexperienced South African Test side has totally failed to perform competitively in the first two Tests of the ongoing three-match Test series. In both those Tests, the hosts India batted first and put the huge first-innings totals on the board. Later, the hosts totally controlled those matches and secured large victories.
In the opening game of this Test series at Visakhapatnam, India won by 203 runs. Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium (Pune) organised the second Test of this series where South Africa faced a humiliating defeat. After 2008, the Pune Test was the first time when South Africa faced the follow-on in a Test match. Finally, India beat the visitors by an innings and 137 runs.
The third and final Test of this series will begin on 19th October. JSCA International Stadium Complex (Ranchi) will host this Test match.
We need to put big runs on the board in the first innings – Faf du Plessis
Talking about their plan for the Ranchi Test, Faf du Plessis has emphasised to score big runs in the first innings.
Faf addressed the media, “We need to put big runs on the board in the first innings.
“When you get runs in the first innings anything from there is possible. For us, first-innings runs will be vital and then anything could happen in the second innings.”
The hosts India are leading this Test series by 2-0 with one to go. Though South Africa have already lost this Test series, they are looking to opening their points account in the inaugural ICC World Test Championship (2019-21).
The ongoing Test series is South Africa’s first Test series in the inaugural ICC World Test Championship. While India is leading this table with 200 points, South Africa hasn’t opened their account after playing two Tests. If South Africa manage to win their forthcoming Ranchi Test, they will earn 40 points.
Faf du Plessis feels that the Ranchi Test will help the spinners very well. After observing this pitch, he has felt that it is a dry and hard track, which provides reverse-swing and spin.
He said, “I think wicket will spin, I looked at the pitch and it looks dry and hard. So I think reverse swing and spin will play a factor in this Test match.
Last time, South Africa won a Test match in India was in February 2010 at Nagpur.
