KL Rahul, VVS Laxman

KL Rahul has been dropped from the 15-member Test squad for the upcoming home series against South Africa. His low performance has given the place to Shubman Gill. The national selectors have given chance to Rohit Sharma as an opener and Shubman Gill can be kept as a backup.

KL Rahul has been given many chances but he mostly remains unsuccessful in converting those into big runs. He has just scored 664 runs in last 30 Test innings. In West Indies tour, in the first Test match, he scored 44 and 38 runs but his score went down in the second Test match where he scored only 13 and 6.

MSK Prasad opined that Rahul is an exceptional player but he is going down because he is in form. He has the time to improve himself and make a comeback.

“We definitely communicated to KL. He is an exceptional talent and unfortunately his form has dipped in red-ball cricket,” Prasad said during press-conference after selection meets in New Delhi. “With Shikhar Dhawan and Murali Vijay has gone, we can’t keep changing both the openers in the side.

“Someone had to stick around. And probably with seniors, who exiting, KL got more opportunities. Unfortunately, he was not delivering consistently. He delivered in patches and that’s why we backed him because when he is on the song, he is treated to watch.”

Defending KL Rahul, MSK Prasad gave the example of VVS Laxman’s return

Rahul should follow the path of VVS Laxman.  As VVS Laxman was not in a good form at one stage but he went back to play for domestic cricket and returned in a great form.

“When VVS Laxman was once dropped from the Indian team, he went back to domestic cricket, scored 1400 runs in the Ranji Trophy and came back,” Prasad added.
