India vs West Indies 2018: Shikhar Dhawan Dropped, Mohammed Siraj & Mayank Agarwal Receive Maiden Test Call
Mayank Agarwal has finally received his maiden India call-up for the upcoming two-match Test series against West Indies. Fast-bowler Mohammed Siraj has also received his first call up for the Test team.
Agarwal was in the frame for quite some time now after his sensational performances in the last one year or so. Barring this year’s Indian Premier League, he has scored heavily against all opposition irrespective of conditions and format.
The Karnataka batsman scored a record-breaking 2141 runs across formats in the last season. He struck five centuries in the Ranji Trophy, three half-centuries in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, and three hundreds and four fifties while leading Karnataka to the Vijay Hazare Trophy title.
He failed to impress in the Indian Premier League. But the right-hander did not take long to make up for his failures in the IPL. He impressed during the tour of England with India A. He scored two centuries in List A games and a fifty in the unofficial Test against West Indies. Back at home, he scored 220 against South Africa A in the four-day match in Bengaluru and a century in the Quadrangular series.
Against Australia A, he slammed two fifties in three innings and fell three short of another. But all these unbelievable exploits have not made helped him break into the national team.
On the other hand, Siraj earned the call after impressing for India A. He recently took 8 for 59 in an innings against Australia. It was his third five-wicket haul in his last four first-class innings. Since his average outing in the Indian Premier League, he took a staggering 37 wickets in just 8 innings for India A.
Meanwhile, the likes of Hardik Pandya, Dinesh Karthik and Shikhar Dhawan have not been named in the squad.
India will host West Indies in October, taking on the visitors in two Tests, five One-Day Internationals and three T20 Internationals.
The series will start with the Tests just six days after the completion of the Asia Cup.
The seven-week series will start with Rajkot hosting the first Test on October 4. The full-fledged series will end with the third T20 in Chennai on November 11.
